STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: AUTHORIZE STAFF TO COMMENCE THE PROCESS TO
OBTAIN LOCAL HISTORIC DESIGNATION FOR THE MILES
BATES HOUSE LOCATED AT 73697 SANTA ROSA WAY
SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works
DATE: June 22, 2017
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, authorize staff to commence the process to obtain local
historic designation for the Miles Bates House located at 73697 Santa
Rosa Way.
Strateqic Plan Obiective
Approval of this action does not directly impact the goals of the Strategic Plan.
However, if historic designation is successful, the designation will assist in the
preservation of the Miles Bates House, and would further Priorities 2 and 4 of the
Tourism and Marketing sections of the Strategic Plan.
Backqround
Staff has received significant community input expressing a desire for historic
designation of the Miles Bates House, which was designed by famed mid-century
modern architect Walter S. White, and is located at 73697 Santa Rosa Way. The home
was built in the mid-1950s, and is the only known example of Mr. White's patented
construction method that allows the unique curving shape of the roof. Staff has
received an appraisal that indicates the property is marginally more valuable with
historic designation.
If authorized to proceed, staff will submit this issue to the SARDA Oversight Board for
approval at its next meeting. The matter will then be forwarded to the State Department
of Finance for their approval. Local historic designation would then be finalized by
approval of the City Council. Staff intends to follow up with marketing efforts, and
ultimately sell the house through auction or sealed bids during Modernism Week 2018.
