HomeMy WebLinkAbout02 Proclamation - Latina History DayWhereas, California established the second Friday in March as Latina History Day in 1999, honoring the long-standing leadership of Latinas in California communities, protecting the physical, economic and spiritual needs of others; and Whereas, the proclamation of Latina History Day during "Women's History Month" memorializes the important role Latinas play in American society; and Whereas, Latina entrepreneurs are a key economic engine for California, generating $19 billion in revenues and employing over 86,000 individuals in California, filling gaps and otherwise unmet community needs; and Whereas, we celebrate contemporary Latinas who continue to build upon the foundation of our ancestors for the betterment of future generations; and Whereas, since its founding in 1989, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) has remained dedicated to improving the education, political and economic status of Latinas through its conferences and flagship programs, positively impacting the lives of over 68,000 Latinas; and Whereas, HOPE enhances knowledge of Latinas' historical contributions to our society coupled with knowledge of the political process in order to guarantee a more representative, democratic government; and Whereas, to date 220 HOPE alumnae have been appointed to serve on over 400 state and local government positions and 400 have served on over 1,200 non- profit boards; and Whereas, we challenge each other through HOPE to ensure that Latinas achieve political and economic parity to benefit all communities and the status of all women. Now, Therefore, I, Kathleen Kelly, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, along with the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim the 12t' day of March, 2021, as Latina History Day and congratulate Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, HOPE, for their service to the Latinas of this great city.
