C36310 STAFF REPORT CITY OF PALM DESERT PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT MEETING DATE: May 13, 2021 PREPARED BY: Thomas Soule, Public Affairs Manager REQUEST: Consideration of a sponsorship request for a virtual Palm Desert Food & Wine Festival. ___________________________________________________________________________ Recommendation By Minute Motion, approve a one-year $30,000 sponsorship for Palm Desert Food & Wine. Funds are available in account number 1104416-4306201. Strategic Plan Palm Desert Food & Wine fulfills priorities identified in the City’s Strategic Plan, including the following: • Tourism and Marketing – Priority 2: “Grow existing events and develop new events to enhance the desirability of Palm Desert as a year-round destination.” • Tourism and Marketing – Priority 3: “Attract new and developing travel/tourism markets.” • Tourism and Marketing – Priority 4: “Support the City’s tourism industry through enhancement of its marketing efforts with an allocation of additional city resources, the development of partnerships, and coordination of existing efforts.” • Economic Development - Priority 3: “Create and attract entertainment and events to enhance and expand the Palm Desert economy and lifestyle.” Executive Summary Approval of the above recommendation will authorize partial use of funds set aside for an in-person Palm Desert Food & Wine Festival for a virtual version for one year. This will allow Palm Springs Life (PSL) an arm of Desert Publications, the event organizers, an opportunity to leverage the audiences of their celebrity chefs to build a virtual experience that promotes the eventual return of the traditional event. Background Beginning in 2018, the City entered a 5-year sponsorship agreement with PSL for both Fashion Week El Paseo and Palm Desert Food & Wine. Both events have grown in stature and prestige in recent years. Palm Desert Food & Wine has notably benefited from its alliance with the James Beard Foundation and its recent roster of celebrity chefs, May 13 , 2021 -Staff Report Consideration of a sponsorship request for a virtual Palm Desert Food & Wine Festival. Page 2 of 2 including Curtis Stone , Gail Gand , Carla Hall , Elizabeth Faulkner, Brook Williamson , Stuart O 'Keeffe and others . With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the in -person event has been cancelled for two years in a row . As an alternative way to re -imagine the event and capitalize on the reach of the Festival's celebrity chefs , PSL is launching an interactive virtual version of the event. This virtual culinary experience offers attendees the opportunity to participate in one of two ways . They have the option of receiving recipes and watch a cooking demonstration of their chosen chef, or they can receive a meal kit to prepare a three -course meal at home alongside the chef. PSL is working with Jensen 's Finest Foods to provide the meal kits , which helps support another local business that has been in Palm Desert since 1983. Participating chefs include Curtis Stone , Jamie Gwen , Afrim Pristine , Gale Gand , Paulette Goto , Tanya Petrovna , Stephen Wambach , Barbie Sommars and Stephen Lee . The $30 ,000 sponsorship allows the City to be the title sponsor of the event and comes with a list of benefits that staff finds to provide great value . In addition to allowing the event to adapt to fit the times , the City's sponsorship will help PSL build the potential aud ience for future occurrences of the Festival and hopefully expand that in -person attendance with all of the economic benefits that brings . Fiscal Analysis The approved budget was $100 ,000 to sponsor an in -person Palm Desert Food & Wine Festival in City Sponsored Events Account No . 1104416-4306201 . Approval of this sponsorship would reduce that expense to $30 ,000 for FY 20/21 . The remaining budget will remain available for other similar events , if any, before June 30 , 2021 .
