Month
________________________________________________________________________
Recommendation
By Minute Motion:
1. Receive and file informational update on the City’s support of FIND Food
Bank campaign to make September Hunger Awareness Month.
Background
Representatives from FIND Food Bank (FFB) recently contacted Palm Desert seeking
support to participate in a Hunger Awareness Campaign for the month of
September. FFB is a corporation that assists Coachella Valley residents that struggle
with food insecurity. FFB seeks the City’s support of the hunger awareness program
during the month of September to bring awareness to food insecurity in the Coachella
Valley in the following ways. The program includes the following efforts:
1. Each city participating would seek a group of city staff to volunteer for one-day
assistance in preparing and distributing food to our local residents.
2. Make a commitment to bring awareness to hunger in the Coachella Valley via
outreach to our business community and key stakeholders. The City would also
deliver the campaign message via our social media platforms and the website.
3. Endorse and bring awareness to Friday, September 17th as Hunger Action Day.
4. Each participating city would light up a prominent location in the color “Orange”
and using this as a community message to rally around eliminating hunger in the
community. Staff proposes to light the front of City hall (Council Chamber area
facing Fred Waring) utilizing orange lighting for the month of September.
5. Palm Desert businesses would also have the option to participate in lighting their
business in orange and donate a portion of business proceeds during September
17th Hunger Action Day.
