AnniversarySTAFF REPORT CITY OF PALM DESERT PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT MEETING DATE: September 9, 2021 PREPARED BY: Thomas Soule, Public Affairs Manager REQUEST: Approve a $1,000 Donation to the 9/11 Promise Scholarship Program in honor of the 20 year Anniversary of 9/11 ___________________________________________________________________________ Recommendation By Minute Motion, approve a $1,000 donation to the 9/11 Promise Scholarship Program to support the children of first responders and veterans. Background Analysis September 11, 2021, will mark the 20th Anniversary of one of the most significant dates in recent American history. For those old enough to remember, the events of 9/11 remain forever etched in their minds. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, the Mayor has suggested the City of Palm Desert consider contributing to an organization that assists those who were most affected that day, as a way to honor the lives lost and the lives forever changed by this tragedy. In researching such organizations, staff came across 9/11 Promise. Initially inspired by the brave and selfless actions displayed by first responders and military on September 11, 2001, the 9/11 Promise is committed to honoring all first responders and military service members. In 2016, a team of seven runners from different backgrounds came together and ran from the Pentagon in Washington, DC to Ground Zero in New York City while raising more than $23,000—all of which went to charity. During this run, they connected and formed friendships with local fire departments, police departments and community members. They remembered, and they honored. What began in 2016 as an event to remember and honor those lost on 9/11, has now become a non-profit focused on providing scholarships to the next generation of those who safeguard our local communities and country. Fiscal Analysis Funds are available in City-Sponsored Events Account No. 1104416-4306201.
