Hoehn - Palm Springs International Airports (PSIA) Commission -Quarterly ReportQuarterly Report City of Palm Desert Representative Palm Springs International Airport Commission For City Council Meeting of July 9, 2020 Air Service Development • The Covid-19 Pandemic has had a devastating effect on air travel to/from the Coachella Valley. Through May of this year air traffic at Palm Springs International Airport has declined by 44.8% compared to the same period last year. In the months of April and May air traffic declined by 96.7% and 90.0% respectively. • The airport received $11 million from the Federal government as part of the FAA Federal Assistance program which allows the airport to maintain its normal operation. Along with operating and capital fund expense reductions the airport is in a good position to navigate through this fiscal year. • Over the last few weeks TSA has reported increases in the number of passengers it processes but the current surge in the epidemic does not bode well for further traffic increases. • Tourism to in the Coachella Valley has been affected greatly with the major hotels continuing to be shut down and July reopening plans now in jeopardy because of the surge of the virus spread. Airport Concessions 1. The RFP process for the selection of a master concessionaire for the airport has been put on hold and the current contract has been extended by one year. 2. The plans for the new car rental facility will be revised to reflect the modified passenger traffic forecast for the next few years. Airport Proiects 1. The ticket wing expansion project is underway. The decline in passenger traffic facilitates the construction work. 2. The Palm Springs City Council approved the purchase of two new fire fighting vehicles 3. The RFP for the rehabilitation of airport loading bridges has been issued Staff Changes • Tom Nolan, the Executive Director of PSP has accepted the position of CEO of the Sanford Airport Authority in Orlando, Florida and will be leaving Palm Springs by the middle of July. • Ulises Aguirre, the current Deputy Executive Director will serve as the Acting Executive Director until a new appointment is made • The Palm Springs City Council approved the filling of the Marketing Director position which had been vacant for a number of years.
