Parks and Recreation Commission Recommendation
At its June 16, 2020, special meeting (virtual) the Commission heard a recommendation
from Commissioner Guyer to name the pedestrian bridge in Civic Center Park on San
Pascual after long time resident, former Parks and Recreation Commissioner, and
College of the Desert staff member, Coach John Marman.
Mr. Marman moved his wife Madonna and their three children to Palm Desert in 1969 and
has been an integral part of the Palm Desert community for over 51 years. He is very
passionate about the City's parks and recreation programs and in 1978 became a
member of the Parks and Recreation Commission and served the community tirelessly
for over 30 years in that capacity. Some of his proudest accomplishments were his
involvement in the construction of Civic Center Park and the Community Center. Coach
Marman volunteered his time with several other committees and boards within the
Coachella Valley including Sister Cities Committee, the Open Space and the Palms to
Pines Rotary Club, Desert Special Olympics, Palm Desert Historical Society, Palm Desert
United Way and the Riverside County Fair Board, all for the betterment of the City and
residents of the Coachella Valley.

While giving back to his community serving with the City, this "local legend" as he has
come 4o be known, was a full time teacher, Athletic Director, Division Chair, Faculty
Senate President, member of the Alumni Foundation and Coach, including track and field,
football and basketball, at College of the Desert (COD) from 1969 until 2002 when he
retired. These are just a few of the many roles Coach Marman played at COD.
Discussion
In 2015, the City Council approved Resolution 2015-33 (copy attached) relating to Parks
& Facility Naming. Within that resolution are various criteria for naming opportunities,
including Item No. 5— An individual or family who contributed significantly to the
community or the facility. Naming the pedestrian bridge in Civic Center Park after John
Marman as recommended by the Parks & Recreation Commission meets the criteria
listed within Resolution 2015-33 and staff is recommending approval of this request.
Fiscal Analvsis
Other than the cost of a naming plaque, the above request will not have any impact on
the FY 2020/2021 budget.
