Home My WebLink About08 Appntmnts - Marketing Cmte - Hulahan and SimpsonSTAFF REPORT CITY OF PALM DESERT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT MEETING DATE: December 10, 2020 PREPARED BY: Thomas Soule, Tourism & Marketing Manager REQUEST: Appoint Jan Hulahan and Brian Simpson to the Marketing Committee ________________________________________________________________________ Recommendation By Minute Motion: 1) Appoint Jan Hulahan, Director of Sales & Marketing at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort to the Palm Desert Marketing Committee to fill an unexpired term through June 30, 2024; 2) Appoint Brian Simpson, Director of Sales & Marketing at Desert Willow Golf Resort, to the Palm Desert Marketing Committee to fill Bruce Nation’s unexpired term through June 30, 2022. Background Analysis Marketing Committee by-laws allow for no more than seven (7) members representing a variety of business segments including a large hotel. Since the 2018 resignation of Barb Wagner, who represented the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort, the Committee has operated with six active members and one vacancy. Jan Hulahan has replaced Ms. Wagner as the Director of Sales & Marketing at the resort and has been regularly attending committee meetings. As the largest resort in the Coachella Valley and a significant partner for the City, Desert Springs Resort is an important voice to have represented on the Marketing Committee. Ms. Hulahan brings to bear a wide understanding of the tourism and hospitality industries based on her years with Marriott. Her appointment to the Marketing Committee would round out the committee’s composition while availing the City of input from the resort. More recently, the resignation from the committee by Bruce Nation, Director of Marketing at Desert Willow Golf Resort, was accepted by City Council at its regular meeting on August 27, 2020. Brian Simpson, Director of Sales & Marketing at Desert Willow has taken on Mr. Nation’s duties at the resort and has been attending meetings of the Marketing Committee since the spring. Golf continues to drive tourism visits to Palm Desert, especially during the COVID pandemic. As an important partner to the City and a prominent local attraction, Desert Willow brings an important marketing perspective to the committee.
