REQUEST: Approval of 2019 SWING `N HOPS STREET PARTY
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, approve the following:
1. Road closure on El Paseo between San Pablo Avenue and Larkspur Lane
for the 2019 Swing 'N Hops Street Party;
2. Consumption/Possession of Alcoholic Beverages on Public Property
Pursuant to Palm Desert Municipal Code 9.58.040;
Strategic Plan Obiective
Approval of the 2019 Swing `N Hops Street Party would help address the following
priorities as specified in the City's 2013-2033 Strategic Plan, Envision Palm Desert —
Forward Together.
• Economic Development Priority No. 3: Create and attract entertainment and
events to enhance and expand the Palm Desert economy and lifestyle.
• Parks and Recreation Priority 3: Make recreational and exercise opportunities
available in all public spaces.
• Marketing and Tourism Priority No. 2: Grow existing events and develop new
events to enhance the desirability of Palm Desert as a year-round destination.
Background
The inaugural Swing `N Hops Street Party, held in 2016, was developed as a featured
First Weekend event for the month of February. The event took place on El Paseo,
between San Pablo Avenue and Larkspur Lane, and saw more than 2,000 attendees
from the Coachella Valley and the southern California region. Since then the event has
grown substantially and has seen growth in many areas including a larger dance floor,
increased art activations and food options, and a more convenient layout for the beer
garden. Attendance has increased each year to an estimated 4,000 locals and tourists
enjoying activities such as dance instruction, live swing music, a classic car show,
contests, and more.

Now headed into Swing `N Hops fourth year, we continue to build upon
the first three years, while adding new elements and experiences fo

Fiscal Analysis
City Council approved $60,000 for the 2019 Swing `n Hops Street Party as part of the
FY 2018/19 budget. Funding is available in Account No. 1104416-4306101.
