REQUEST: Authorization to designate a 2009 Palm Desert Police motorcycle
(VIN JH2SC51709K600132) for surplus and disposal.
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, designate a 2009 Palm Desert Police Department motorcycle (VIN
JH2SC51709K600132) as surplus and dispose of as required under an existing
property insurance claim.
Commission Recommendation
The Palm Desert Public Safety Commission did not review this matter as it is a routine
administrative action related to an insurance claim.
Background Analvsis
On July 24, 2018, a Palm Desert motor officer was in a training accident with his
assigned motorcycle while participating in the pursuit portion of his training. The deputy
suffered significant injuries and is still recovering. The Honda motorcycle sustained
major damage and a property insurance claim was filed with the City's insurer, the
California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (CJPIA). The CJPIA designated the vehicle
as a total loss and staff respectfully recommends it be designated as surplus and
disposed of appropriately under the claim.
Fiscal Analvsis
This mater is related to a current property insurance claim and the City will receive,
approximately $25,000 from the CJPIA.
