Strategic Plan Appointment/Reappointment of individuals to the City's standing Committees and Commissions furthers the Strategic Plan's objective of continuing to provide opportunities for valuable citizen engagement in the City's governance. Background Analvsis On an annual basis, or as directed throughout the year, the City Council reviews vacancies, current applications, and term expirations on the City's standing Committees and Commissions. Applicants are selected for interviews, and resulting recommendations for appointment/reappointment are provided to the City Clerk for inclusion on the next available regular City Council Meeting agenda. Applicant interviews were conducted in City Council Study Sessions on three dates, Monday, January 14; Wednesday, January 23; and Tuesday, February 5. After the final session, staff was given direction regarding recommendations for appointments and reappointments as indicated above. I've been in the art field for a decade as a professional, and informally for many years prior. What I would bring to the Art in Public Places Commission is curatorial experience in kinetic, light and sound art as well as traditional sculpture and painting. I know how to shape a cohesive narrative, and I have particular expertise in pop-up and short-term exhibitions. As a journalist, I translate artistic concepts into accessible language. I want more people to understand and appreciate art, not be intimidated by it. Before going into the art field, I worked as a management consultant for private, state and federal organizations. During this time (1995 to 2005), I developed strategic plans, wrote Requests for Proposals, reviewed proposals, and served as the project manager for grantees. Before forming my business in 1995, I worked in communications and marketing. I've been a part-time resident of Palm Desert since 2004. 1 am now transitioning to permanent. When I lived in San Diego, I curated exhibitions at the highly regarded Central Library Art Gallery and San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery. The Central Library show, "Rainmaker," honored the centennial of a devastating flood, using that as the entry point to discuss water, drought and climate change. It included interactive digital animation, sound pieces and historic artifacts, along with photography, painting and sculpture. The Mesa College exhibition, "Lure," used light, sound, kinetic and performance art to explore issues of distraction and sensory overload. In addition, I curated an experimental art festival under the umbrella of Art San Diego, the city's art fair. The Art Labs featured work from 250 artists, curators and volunteers at 18 sites in San Diego and Tijuana. Pieces included a wide range of visual art, performances, temporary installations and virtual projects. The event was attended by more than 5000 people and received extensive media coverage. My local projects include serving as a consultant on the first two years of Art Palm Springs (2012 and 2013, then called the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair). I established relationships with museums and arts organizations throughout Southern California, bringing them to the Coachella Valley. I worked with Jennifer Henning of the City of Palm Springs to design and install a pop-up gallery at the airport, and helped develop a Curator's Weekend lecture series. i also wrote promotional pieces, managed online advertising and programmed social media. I'm currently freelancing for Palm Springs Life.
