REQUEST: Approval of the 2019 Relay for Life of Coachella Valley
Recommendation
By Minute Motion:
1. Approval of the 2019 Relay for Life of Coachella Valley scheduled for
Saturday, November 9, 2019; and
2. Temporary waiver of Palm Desert Municipal Code (PDMC) sections:
a. 11.01.140 (Amplified Sound in City Parks);
b. 11.01.080.0 (Placement of Advertising Signage in City Parks);
c. 11.01.080 Q (Vendor Sales in City Parks); and
d. 11.01.080 W (Possession/Consumption of Alcohol in City Parks)
pursuant to PDMC 9.58.040.
Strateqic Plan Obiective
Approval of the 2019 Relay for Life of Coachella Valley would help address the following
priorities outlined in the 2013/2033 Strategic Plan, Envision Palm Desert — Forward
Together.
• Economic Development Priority 3: Create and attract entertainment and events
to enhance and expand the Palm Desert economy and lifestyle.
• Parks and Recreation Priority 3: Make recreational and exercise opportunities
available in all public spaces.
• Tourism and Marketing Priority 2: Grow existing events and develop new events
to enhance the desirability of Palm Desert as a year-round destination.
Background Analvsis
The 2019 Relay for Life of Coachella Valley, scheduled for Saturday, November 9, 2019
at Freedom Park, is the world's largest and most impactful fundraising event to end
cancer. It unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled
cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all.
There is no charge for attendees to sign up for the walk, but donations are welcome.
Relay for Life is a family -oriented team event where participants can walk or run around
the track, relay -style, for 12 hours (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.). Participants camp out around the

track and when they aren't taking their turn on the track, they take part in fun activities
with family, neighbors, and co-workers. Attendance is between 800 to 1,000 supporters.
This is one of more than 2,500 Relay events that take place each year around the
country to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. Relay for Life of Coachella
Valley has taken place for the last 22 years in different cities across the valley. Staff
recommends approving the 2019 Relay for Life of Coachella Valley event to take place
in Palm Desert at Freedom Park.
