ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE ROOM 73-510 FRED WARING DRIVE, PALM DESERT, CA 92260 I. CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Lily Kim convened the meeting at 6:08 p.m. II. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None IV. PRESENTATIONS None MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE JANUARY 14, 2019 V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the December 10, 2018, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Vice Chair Fitzpatrick, second by Member Kulas, and a 7-6 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Berenbaum, Cho, Fitzpatrick, Kim, Kulas, Ross, and Scibona; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Ahmad, Capobianco, Dewegeli, Duckworth, Haile, and Shaw), the December 10, 2018, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. Pledge of Allegiance and Presentation at the City Council Meeting on February 14, 2019 Chair Kim indicated that the date of the City Council meeting had been changed to February 28, 2019. Member Kulas volunteered to attend the meeting to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide a presentation on Youth Committee activities. VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS None IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COUNCIL MEMBERS None B. STAFF 1. Meeting and Event Attendance Ms. Lawrence reiterated the importance of members attending monthly meetings as the meetings cannot proceed effectively without a quorum. She asked that members contact her in advance over the phone or via email if they cannot attend a monthly meeting so that she can reschedule in the event that there will not be a quorum. She reminded appointed members that they are permitted two excused absences per calendar year and added that members should make every effort to be 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE JANUARY 14, 2019 on time for the meetings. Ms. Lawrence also asked that members contact her if they cannot attend an event that they signed up for. 2. Young Artist and Author Showcase Ms. Lawrence deferred this item for discussion during the Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation update. Ms. Lawrence noted that the Palm Desert Half Marathon and 5K scheduled for February 10, 2019 is seeking volunteers. She agreed to forward contact information to members via email in case anyone is interested in signing up. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Events a. Youth Senior Technology Workshops Ms. Lawrence circulated a sign-up sheet for a workshop scheduled at the Joslyn Center on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. b. Anti -bullying Workshop in Schools No update. c. Youth Committee Presentation - Palm Desert Charter Middle School No update. 2. Proiects and Sub -Committee Updates a. No -Idle Zone for Cleaner Air For Schools No update. b. Anti -bullying Subcommittee No update. I MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE JANUARY 14, 2019 c. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation Member Kulas indicated that the Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation worked with the City of Palm Desert to bring the Young Artist and Author Showcase to the Palm Desert Library. Ms. Lawrence added that the exhibit would be available for public view in the community room through the end of January. Member Kulas noted that she would be working with her school to get the word out about the exhibit and the 2019 submission deadline. d. Legislative Review Committee No update. 3. Other Ms. Lawrence asked the members if they had any ideas on what type of projects they would like to focus on this year. Member Kulas indicated that she would like to start a Peace Club and asked if the City had a community garden. Ms. Lawrence indicated that the City has two community gardens. She asked Member Kulas to think about some activities that the Youth Committee could work on in conjunction with her idea for a Peace Club. It was the consensus of the committee not to focus on anti -bullying workshops this year. Chair Kim suggested instead holding a Sustainability Party for Lincoln Elementary School since the committee was not able to hold the holiday party for the students. The committee concurred that April would be a good month as it would coincide with Earth Day. Chair Kim asked members to bring their friends to the Youth Committee meeting in effort to increase membership. X.
