ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE ROOM 73-510 FRED WARING DRIVE, PALM DESERT, CA 92260 CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Lily Kim convened the meeting at 6:03 p.m. II. ROLL CALL IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the January 14, 2019, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Member Ahmad, second by Member Berenbaum, and a 7-6 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Ahmad, Berenbaum, Haile, Kim, Kulas, Ross, and Shaw; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Capobianco, Cho, Dewegeli, Duckworth, Fitzpatrick, and Scibona), the January 14, 2019, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. Pledge of Allegiance and Presentation at the City Council Meeting on March 28, 2019 Upon consensus of the committee, Member Todd Shaw was elected to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide a presentation on Youth Committee activities at the City Council meeting on March 28, 2019. VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS A. Approve MINUTES of the November 5, 2018, Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Member Haile, second by Member Ahmad, and a 7-6 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Ahmad, Berenbaum, Haile, Kim, Kulas, Ross, and Shaw; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Capobianco, Cho, Dewegeli, Duckworth, Fitzpatrick, and Scibona), the November 5, 2018, Minutes were approved as presented. IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COUNCIL MEMBERS Councilmember Harnik reported that the City Council recently held a goal - setting workshop. She noted that the City recently looked into a trial shared motorized scooter program and decided to hold off on moving forward at this time. She added that the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) is looking into an event train to transport people from Los Angeles to Coachella Fest. 14 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 11, 2019 B. STAFF 1. Plastics Awareness Campaign Ms. Lawrence reported that Councilmember Harnik suggested that the City's Sustainability Committee work on developing a plastics awareness campaign and would like to see the Youth Committee get involved with this initiative, as well. Councilmember Harnik indicated that youth makes a difference in elementary and middles schools and noted the importance of bringing awareness to over packaging, reducing, and reusing. 2. Youth Committee Recruitment Ms. Lawrence noted that at the City Council meeting on February 14, 2019, three (3) members will be resigned for lack of attendance and two (2) alternate members will be appointed to the committee. She added that she contacted Lynette Wohlmuth at Palm Desert High School to request her assistance with promoting the Youth Committee and noted that an article will be included in the City's BrightSide newsletter with the intent to recruit more members. She encouraged current members to bring friends to meetings and promote the committee in an effort to build membership. Upon discussion regarding the best form of communication between Ms. Lawrence and the members, the consensus was text messaging was the preferred method. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS Events a. Youth Senior Technology Workshop — Wednesday, February 27, 2019 Ms. Lawrence circulated the sign-up sheet for the event and reminded members of the importance of showing up if they sign up. b. Sustainability Party at Lincoln Elementary School — Date TBD Ms. Lawrence indicated that Lincoln Elementary School is excited that the committee is offering to host another party for the students. The consensus of the committee was to hold the event on Tuesday, April 23, at 3:30 p.m. Ms. Lawrence circulated a sign-up sheet and said that the event specifics would be discussed at the March meeting. c. Youth Committee Presentation at Palm Desert Charter Middle School — Date TBD No update. 3 IV MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 11, 2019 2. Proiects and Sub -Committee Updates a. No -Idle Zone for Cleaner Air For Schools Ms. Lawrence indicated that there was a safety recall on the power adapter for the air sensor. She will inform the committee once it is up and running again. b. Anti -bullying Subcommittee No update. c. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation Member Kulas indicated that the Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation is looking to improve their website. She asked if anyone had experience with this to let her know. d. Legislative Review Committee No update. 3. Other Member Huang noted that the Riverside County Youth Advisory Council uses the Remind App and said it seems to work well for them. X.
