PRESENTATIONS Randy Chavez, Landscape Supervisor — City of Palm Desert Mr. Chavez gave a presentation about his career with the City and the services his department provides for the City of Palm Desert. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the December 11, 2017, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Member Johnson, second by Member Berenbaum, and a 13-2 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Ahmad, Berenbaum, Chang, Cho, Dan, Fitzpatrick, Frary, Haile, Johnson, C. Kim, Ross, Schwartz, and Shaw; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: L. Kim and Wood:), the December 11, 2017, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS Upon consensus by the Committee, Member Cho was appointed to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Committee activities at the January 25, 2018 City Council Meeting. COUNCIL MEMBERS X1 Council Member Harnik and Ms. Glickman gave a presentation on the Wi-Fi air quality monitor the City has acquired. The Committee opted to place the monitor on the City owned restroom located on the east side of Magnesia Falls Drive and Portola Avenue, where students are dropped -off and picked -up from Palm Desert Charter Middle School. B. STAFF Attendance Sheets — Ms. Glickman reminded the committee members to turn in their attendance sheets. 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE JANUARY 8, 2018 C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Events a. Youth Senior Technology Workshops — January 10, 2018 and February 14, 2018 Ms. Glickman reminded the committee of the upcoming dates. b. Anti -bullying Workshop — TBD Workshop will be held prior to the next Youth Committee meeting. c. Youth Committee Presentation - Palm Desert Charter Middle School No report. 2. Proiects a. PRESENTATIONS Martin Alvarez, Economic Development Director, City of Palm Desert Mr. Alvarez spoke about his position as the Economic Development Director for the City, as well as what the City is looking at to move forward with Economic Development. MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FEBRUARY 12, 2017 A. MINUTES of the January 8, 2018, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Member Wood, second by Member U. Shaw, and a 12-3 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Ahmad, Chang, I. Cho, Dan, Fitzpatrick, Haile, Johnson, C. Mm, L Kim, Ross, Shaw and Wood; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Berenbaum, Frary, and Schwartz), the January 8, 2018, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. Events a. Youth Senior Technology Workshop Update — January 10, 2018 and February 14, 2018 The workshop on January 10 went well and a sign-up sheet was distributed for the February 14 workshop. b. Anti -bullying Workshop in Schools - TDB The sub -committee met and developed talking points for future presentations. 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 12, 2017 Staff is working on setting up presentations. c. Youth Committee Presentation — Palm Desert Charter Middle Schools — TBD 2. ' Proiects a. No -Idle for Cleaner Air For Schools - The air quality monitor will be installed soon. MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE MARCH 12, 2018 IV. PRESENTATIONS Steve Arbuckle, Interim Director — EOPS/CARE/Foster Youth — College of the Desert (COD.) Mr. Arbuckle presented on the EOPS/CARE/Foster Youth program at COO and asked the committee for suggestions on how to reach out to other students in their schools who are in the foster care system. Anti -bullying Workshop in Schools — March 21, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center — An April workshop will be scheduled at a later date. b. Youth Committee Presentation - Palm Desert Charter Middle School - TBD This presentation may not take place this school year. Staff will distribute fliers about the Youth Committee to area schools. 2. Proiects a. No -Idle for Cleaner Air For Schools - A delay has occurred with the installation of the WiFi portion of the air monitor, however it should be installed in the next two weeks. 3. Sub -Committee Updates a. Anti -bullying Subcommittee Committee will present on March 21, 2018. b. Legislative Review Committee No report. c. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation. The Foundation is currently planning a luncheon to honor Mary Helen Kelly, as well as an international meeting for March. d. MINUTES of the March 12, 2018, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Vice Chair Johnson, second by Member Wood, and a 10-5 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES:, Chang, Cho, Dan, Fitzpatrick, Haile, Johnson, L. Ms. Glickman presented on and invited the Youth Committee members to volunteer for the Relay For Life event to be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage. Palm Desert Sister Cities — Charles Riggs Mr. Riggs talked to the Youth Committee about the Sister Cities Foundation and invited them to be liaisons for the Foundation. A sign-up sheet was circulated. C. City of Palm Desert's Tourism and Marketing Manager — Thomas Soule Mr. Soule talked to the Committee about what his job entails, as well as his background and education. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES C A. STAFF Discussed notebooks for the Alternate — OCTOBER 8, 2018 Ms. Glickman inquired as to which new alternates needed a Youth Committee notebook. Three (3) alternates indicated the need for notebooks, as well as shirts. Attendance sheets - Ms. Glickman handed out attendance tracking sheets for members to track their volunteer hours throughout the year so the information can be used for future letters of appreciation. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Events a. Anti -bullying Workshop in Schools - At this time, the Youth Committee members were not interested in setting up workshops. Mayor Harnik suggested that the Committee work with the Sister Cities Foundation to connect with youth from Palm Desert Sister Cities to talk about cyber-bullying b. Youth Committee Presentation - Palm Desert Charter Middle Schools — TBD. c. Pledge at the City Council Meeting on November 15, 2018 Ms. Lawrence noted that according to Palm Desert City Clerk, Rachelle Klassen, a Youth Committee member was no longer needed to lead the Pledge of Allegiance a1 the November 15, 2018 City Council Meeting. COUNCIL MEMBERS On behalf of the Palm Desert City Council, Councilmember Harnik thanked the Youth Committee members for their contributions to the community and provided those present with a gift card in recognition for their service during the year. 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 5, 2018 B. STAFF Ms. Lawrence reminded members to turn in their attendance sheets for volunteer hours. Ms. Lawrence passed along appreciation from Mr. Rob Ballew, with the Family YMCA of the Desert, to those members that participated with the Golf Cart Parade. Ms. Lawrence circulated a sign-up sheet for the City's Celebrate the Season event scheduled for Friday, December 7, 2018, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gardens on El Paseo. Members present will assist children with decorating cookies and monitor the line for photos with Santa Claus. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Events a. Youth Senior Technology Workshops Members agreed that they would like to see this take place at the Joslyn Center quarterly on either a Tuesday or Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Ms. Lawrence said that she would follow-up on this at the next meeting. b. Anti -bullying Workshop in Schools Councilmember Harnik and Ms. Glickman offered some great references for future workshops. c. Youth Committee Presentation - Palm Desert Charter Middle School It was noted that this would be an end of the school year recruitment scheduled for the end of the year. d. Lincoln Elementary School Holiday Party Members agreed to hold the party on Tuesday, December 18, and Ms. Lawrence noted she would reach out to the school to confirm. STAFF Ms. Lawrence noted the importance of members attending the monthly meetings and asked that members contact her in advance if they cannot attend because there is no point in holding the meeting without a quorum. Ms. Lawrence thanked those members that assisted with the Celebrate the Season event and asked that members contact her in the future if they cannot attend an event they sign up for.
