HomeMy WebLinkAboutStatus Update - Presidents Plaza Prkng Lot ImprvmntCITY OF PALM DESERT CITY MANAGER'S DEPARTMENT INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM To: Honorable Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, and Members of the City Council From: Lauri Aylaian, City Manager Date: September 12, 2019 Subject: Status Update for the President's Plaza Parking Lot Improvement Project This informational memorandum is provided to you in response to a request by Councilmember Jan Harnik at the August 22, 2019 meeting of the City Council. The President's Plaza Parking Lot Improvement Project was presented to the City Council with five design options at the City Council meeting on July 11, 2019. Option 5 was selected with instruction to staff to incorporate additional trees/landscaping and placement of full-size waste receptacles in the center of both parking lots. Since then, the design consultant has submitted a site plan with additional landscaping and waste receptacles to the City to solicit comments before proceeding with the full detailed design. Public Works Department, Fire Department, and Burrtec returned their comments to the consultant about two weeks ago so that the consultant could move forward with the full design. The design consultant anticipates submitting the 60% design plans in mid -September. As noted in the presentation at the July 11th Council Meeting, the modifications to the design will cause a delay in the overall schedule, due in large part to impacts on the existing utilities. The utility companies, not the City's design consultant, will perform redesign of Southern California Edison and CVWD services, meters, and lateral lines. With these anticipated delays taken into account, staff anticipates completion of the design in February 2020, bidding the project in March, and beginning construction in summer 2020. This maintains the goal of having the project under construction during the off-season. Staff is in close communication with the design engineer and utility companies for any issues that might arise that would cause changes to this schedule.
