Hi Christian
Perfect timing with this email.
I would like for the City to do a Proclamation for the Bates House - and present it on December 12, at 4pm
It would be really wonderful if all of you could be there to accept it.
We will also be doing one for the Historical Society of Palm Desert, which was very instrumental with the "Save the
Wave House" campaign. I imagine the Cultural Preservation Committee will want to be there as well -you met them
many months ago.
As Lauri said in her recent e-mail to you, we are all so very excited and pleased with the project, and the "Fame" it is
bringing to Palm Desert. I cannot imagine this project would have ever been so successful, without your special team
I will look forward to hearing from you, that you will be able to accept a Proclamation on Dec. 12.
Thank you again - for becoming part of our Community!

Dear Lauri and Mayor Weber,
I hope this note finds you doing well. Restoration of the Miles C. Bates House is nearing completion and we are
excited to share the transformation with you both over the next few months, including as part of the 2020
Modernism Week.
On behalf of our family, I also wanted to thank you for the City government and City Council's support of the
restoration of the "Wave House." We're very appreciative of the City's willingness and creativity in partnering
to preserve this important architectural and cultural landmark, making it accessible to the public and returning it
to the cultural and civic life of the community.
With warm regards,
Gil, Teri, McKenna, and Christian Stayner

Whereas, Stayner Architects, the family's
architecture/development/contracting firm, does projects for "public benefit"
clients; and
Whereas, the City of Palm Desert distributed information about the
distinctive house designed by Walter S. White for Miles C. Bates, previously
known as the Wave House or the Bates House, now known as Desert Wave,
being available for auction, and the Stayner family read about the unique
house and met with City staff, led by Cora Gaugush, to discuss the
possibility of purchasing and restoring it; and
Whereas, this building presented an attitude of structural
experimentation, with such a clear relationship between the desert and the
interior, and White was an inventor, tinkerer, and builder as much as he was
an architect, to which the Stayner family responded as it felt consistent with
their own interests and sensibilities; and
Whereas, the City of Palm Desert contributed $50,000 to the
restoration, recognizing this as another destination location incorporated into
the Palm Springs Modernism Week tours, and the City of Palm Desert
worked with the Stayner family to make the restoration possible in terms of
codes, financial support, and finding a way to activate the house and make
it accessible to the public and to the community to the degree that this might
prove to be seen as a "best practice" for other cities; and
Whereas, O'Donnell Brothers Construction, Kevin O'Donnell and Lynn
O'Donnell provided an astonishing amount of professionalism and have put
much work and love into the restoration over the past 13 months; and
Whereas, this project was a compilation by the members of the family:
Gil Stayner in terms of the architecture and the construction oversight,
McKenna Stayner who was involved in many facets of the project, from
selection of textiles to historical research, Teri Fox-Stayner who was a vocal
and enthusiastic cheerleader to the entire process, and the contribution of
John Going, a valued member of the construction team; and
Whereas, this project would not have been possible without Christian
Stayner, his contribution of architectural skill, attention to every detail and
countless hours coordinating with City officials, members of the community,
and the construction team and staff.
Now, Therefore, I, Susan Marie Weber, Mayor of the City of Palm
Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby Proclaim
Thursday, the 12th day of December, 2019 as
Fox-Stayner Family Day
in the City of Palm Desert, and call upon our citizens to recognize the
substantial contributions made by Stayner Architects through the restoration
and preservation of this remarkable house for Palm Desert residents and
visitors.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand
and have caused the Official Seal of the City of Palm
Desert, California, to be affixed this 12th day of
December 2019.
