of a person's overall health and wellness; and
Whereas, one in five adults experience a mental health condition in any
given year, and one in 25 adults live with mental illness such as major
depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia; and
Whereas, approximately one-half of chronic mental illnesses begin by
the age of 14, and three-quarters begin by the age of 24; and
Whereas, long delays often occur between the onset of symptoms and
when individuals get help; and
Whereas, early identification and treatment can make a difference in
successful management of mental illness and long-term recovery; and
Whereas, every person and community can make a difference in helping
end the silence and stigma that for too long has surrounded mental illness and
discouraged people from getting help; and
Whereas, public education and civic activities can encourage mental
health, promote the wellness and recovery of those with a mental health
condition and help improve the lives of individuals and families affected by
mental illness.
Now, Therefore, I, Sabby Jonathan, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert,
California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby Proclaim the Month
of May 2018, as
Mental Health Month
in the City of Palm Desert and encourage citizens to expand the dialogue
about the steps we can take to promote the mental health and wellness of all
people.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and
have caused the Official Seal of the City of Palm Desert,
California, to be affixed this 22nd day of March, 2018.
