New York to William and Minerva Milk; and
Whereas, after graduating from the New York State College for
Teachers in 1951 , Harvey joined the U.S. Navy, ultimately serving as
a diving instructor at a base in San Diego, California, during the Korean
War; and
Whereas, after being discharged in 1955, Harvey worked a
variety of jobs, including a public school teacher, production associate
for Broadway musicals, stock analyst and Wall Street investment
banker; and
Whereas, Harvey moved to San Francisco in 1972 where he
opened a camera shop on Castro Street named Castro Camera; and
Whereas, Harvey found his voice as a leader and activist and in
1977 after three tries finally won a seat on the San Francisco City-
County Board of Supervisors. He became the city's first openly gay
officer as well as one of the first openly gay individuals to be elected to
office in the United States; and
Whereas, Harvey Milk was assassinated on November 27,
1978; and
Whereas, Harvey's legacy as a leader and pioneer has endured
with numerous books and films made about his life.
Now, Therefore, I, Sabby Jonathan, Mayor of the City of
Palm Desert, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby Proclaim
Friday, May 18, 2018, as
Harvey Milk Day
in the City of Palm Desert acknowledging the need to facilitate equality
for all members of our community.
