HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntatn - CVWD Centennial Anniversary Day On January 9, 1918, Coachella Valley citizens voted 324 to 49 in
favor of organizing the Coachella Valley County Water District.
The District entered into its first contract with the Federal
government in 1919 to survey possible routes for the All-American
Canal and then signed a contract with the Bureau of Reclamation
to build the All-American Canal and Imperial Dam in 1934.
Former General Manager Lowell Weeks developed the drainage
system essential to permit the Coachella Valley to blossom and
provide for the drainage of natural occurring soil salinity from more
than 37,400 acres of land.
The CVWD began serving domestic water supplies in the 1960s
and is now the largest provider of drinking water in the Coachella
Valley.
It is now a multi-faceted agency that delivers irrigation and
domestic water, collects and recycles wastewater, provides
regional storm water protection, replenishes the groundwater basin
and promotes water conservation.
Therefore the entire City Council recognizes today as the
CVWD Centennial Anniversary
Thanking them for the substantial contributions they make to
protect our health, safety and quality of life.
