HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntatn - Tree of Life Synagogue Pennsylvania Whereas, on October 27, 2018, a gunman entered the Tree of Life
synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during morning services and opened fire
killing 11 people and injuring nine more; and
Whereas, the innocent faithful at the Tree of Life were targeted and
murdered simply for who they were and how they worshipped; and
Whereas, the attack at the Tree of Life synagogue was the deadliest
attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States; and
Whereas, history has tragically taught us what happens when people
stand silently by and allow acts of intolerance, hatred and violence to occur; and
Whereas, people in communities across the nation are joining together
to oppose anti-Semitic and racist bigotry and hate acts committed against their
neighbors; and
Whereas, the City of Palm Desert recognizes the dignity and worth of
every human being, and is committed to promoting peace and harmony among
all people regardless of faith, race, color, culture, class, language, age, gender,
or other apparent difference; and
Whereas, Palm Desert condemns and will not tolerate prejudice, racism,
bigotry, hatred, bullying, or violence towards any group within or outside of our
community; and
Whereas, the City is committed to inclusion and diversity and has passed
a resolution welcoming people of all faiths, creeds, ancestries, and ethnicities
without regard to disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or immigration
status; and
Whereas, Palm Desert stands united with all who oppose the rising tide
of hate and violence fueled by ignorance in our society; and
Whereas, we mourn the loss of the worshippers at the Tree of Life and
share in the sorrow of their family, friends, and community.
Now, Therefore, I, Sabby Jonathan, Mayor of the City of
Palm Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, call upon the citizens
of Palm Desert to observe November 15, 2018, as a day of remembrance for
those slain at the Tree of Life synagogue and for all who have suffered and
continue to suffer hatred and violence because of who they are and how they
worship.
