On Saturday evening,November 19.2016,the Riverside County Fair&National Date Festival held the
Queen Scheherazade Scholarship Pageant at the Fairgrounds in Indio.The Fullenwider Auditorium was
transformed into a scene out of the 1001 Arabian Nights•as three young women were chosen to represent
the Fair as the Queen and her Court.
Thirteen young ladies competed for their chance to be crowned queen;scholarship amounts range from
$3,000 to$3,500.The ladies were previously interviewed by judges in an elimination round in October and
during the Pageant gave a speech in business attire,answered questions in evening gowns and in
traditional Arabian costumes.The 2017 court winners are Ngan Nguyen for Queen Scheherazade.Alyssah
Moffatt for Princess Dunyazade,and Maya Jones for Princess Jasmine.
Crowned Queen Scheherazade was Ngan Nguyen.Ngan is a senior at la Quinta High School.She is
involved in many community activities such as a member of Key Club,Knots for Tots,Leo Club and a
church member for the choir and reader for Vietnamese mass.Ngan has been on the Honor Roll for three
years and won second place in a recent spelling bee.She has aspirations of becoming a pharmacist. Ngan
is an immigrant from Vietnam,with English as a second language,and wants to"inspire others to accept
challenges by doing something that is beyond their capability".
Alyssah Moffatt from La Quinta High School,was crowned Princess Dunyazade.She is a senior and last
year received an award for Academic Honors.Alyssah is involved with her church,choir,Future Teacher's
Club and Academy of Musical Performance(AMP)Camp.She would like to attend a 4-year university and
pursue a Music or Sociology degree.
Crowned Princess Jasmine was Maya Jones.also a senior at La Quints High School.Maya is Rotary Club
President and a volunteer peer math tutor.She is involved with National Charity league and wants to
attend a 4-year university with the intent of earning her degree in Mathematics so she can teach upper
level AP or IB mathematics to high school students.

The new Queen and her Court will reign as aribassadors for the 71 st Annual Riverside County Fair&
