many lives in Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley; and
Whereas, William and Gladys moved from Minnesota to Palm
Desert in 1955 after William served in the Air Force in Germany for 2
years; and
Whereas, they lived on Catalina Island in 1957 and 1958 while
William worked on building the Pavilion Lodge Hotel, and then moved
back to Palm Desert to their home on Verba Santa Drive, where Gladys
still lives today; and
Whereas, William and Gladys found their way into the swimming
pool industry and purchased the Poolquip Pool Store in Palm Springs in
1958, and actively started building pools in 1960; and
Whereas, in 1963, with 4 other professionals, they founded the
Master Pools Guild, now a global network of elite custom pool builders
and craftsmen who uphold the standards of high quality, customer
service, integrity and good business ethics; and
Whereas, William and Gladys believed development would move
eastward in the Coachella Valley. To the amazement of their peers, in
mid-1964 they opened Master Pools & Spas at 73400 Highway 111 in
Palm Desert; and
Whereas, moving a short distance down Highway 111 in January
1966, Master Pools & Spas was the first tenant in the current Jensen's
Shopping Center; and
Whereas, to date, Master Pools & Spas has constructed and
remodeled in excess of 15,000 residential and commercial projects; and
Whereas, after 50 years at their location, the business has moved
to a larger facility to better serve its construction, remodeling and
maintenance divisions; and
Whereas, the 3 Hanousek sons, William, James and Steven,
continue the tradition and excellence of the business started by William
and Gladys; and
Whereas, Gladys has taken care of the entire Hanousek family,
raised 3 sons and is critical in their 66 year history of business success.
Now, Therefore, I, Jan C. Harnik, Mayor of the City of Palm
Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby
Proclaim Thursday, January 26, 2017, as
Gladys Hanousek Day
in the City of Palm Desert and urge all residents to join me in extending
our appreciation to her for believing in and building a better Palm Desert.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and have
caused the Official Seal of the City of Palm Desert, California,
to be affixed this 26th day of January 2017.
