I wanted to follow-up with a friendly reminder regarding our area wide challenge to all Southern California Mayors and Civic Officials to participate in the Thirteenth Annual "Mayor-athon" at the Donate Life Run/Walk on Saturday, April 29, 2017.The event's founders, Fullerton residents Craig and Kathleen Hostert, began the event fifteen years ago to educate the community on the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. Since then, the event has achieved overwhelming success with over 12,000 participants in 2016. 1 The purpose of the "Mayor-athon" is to challenge the Mayors and Civic Officials of Southern California to participate in the event and celebrate the life-saving mission of OneLegacy and the Donate Life California Organ &Tissue Donor Registry.OneLegacy and Donate Life California have chosen the Donate Life Run/Walk as a signature event to promote this life-saving tool, which the California Legislature authorized in 2003 (SB 112, Speier) and linked to the Department of Motor Vehicles in July 2006 (SB 689, Speier). Over the past ten years, the Donate Life California Donor Registry has grown to over 13 million Californians making the commitment to become an organ, eye and tissue donor! Attached is the Mayor-athon packet and we hope that your city will be able to support our life-saving mission. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. THANK YOU to the following Mayors and City Councilmembers for their commitment to attend this year's 15th Annual Donate Life Run/Walk. You would never guess that Craig used to rely on dialysis to maintain his life or that two of the family members are living kidney donors. In 1986, Craig was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder of the kidneys. When his kidneys failed, Craig's three brothers and sister tested to be kidney donors, but were ruled out. After years on dialysis for Craig and endless testing, Kathleen was matched as a donor. On June 25, 1998, the transplant surgery was completed, with successful results. After the lifesaving transplant, Craig and Kathleen have made it their mission to spread the word of organ donation. In 2003, they founded the Southern California Donate Life Run/Walk and Family Festival which has grown to be the largest gathering in the country to promote organ and tissue donation. Over the years Justin and then Nicole began to take more active roles in the event and today are just as committed as their parents to the cause. Justin is responsible for the entire route and Nicole is Assistant Stage Manager. In 2012, the family was faced once again with the catastrophic illness of kidney failure. After 15 years, the kidney that Kathleen donated to Craig failed and Craig was once again on dialysis. The family was devastated. On December 11, 2012 Craig's life was once again saved by a transplant. Justin was 9 at the time of the first transplant and was upset that he was not able to give his dad a kidney. He wanted to save his dads life. Fourteen years later, he did just that. Justin's left kidney was removed and transplanted into Craig. To this end, the entire family is committed to do whatever they can to celebrate the miracle of transplantation and they look forward to continuing the Southern California community tradition, the Donate Life Run/Walk. liti. , SI S 6 uj o e F • c: le _ . 761 West Kimberly Avenue Placentia,CA 92870 (714)453-3292 Fax(213)633-1564 www.OneLegacy.arg www.DonateLifeRunWalk.org IlAiiiii; kg 15th Annual Southern California U=WA S Donate Life Run/Walk -- pMSLV FE57 s7-47 P.49 OneLegacy The Event's Producer: Onelegacy OneLegacy is part of a nationwide network of non-profit, federally designated organizations dedicated to "bridging lives" through the c?I9 life-saving and life enhancing benefits of organ and tissue donation. v Working together with hospitals, transplant centers, healthcare OneLegacy support agencies, and civic and community organizations, saving lies through organ eye&tissue donation OneLegacy serves a diverse population of over 20 million people in our seven-county Southern California service area. OneLegacy works with our hospital partners to identify potential donor families. We help these families, in the face of grief, to understand and consent to life-giving organ and tissue donation, and lead them sensitively through the donation process. We then work with our transplant center partners to allocate donated organs to the appropriate recipients per United Network for Organ Sharing(LINOS) policies. As a public health agency, we also educate the public about the critical need for organ and tissue donation. We proudly work with a network of transplant recipient organizations, blood banks, physicians groups and other community organizations to achieve these aims.
