HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOD - Charger Sculpture Turf Rmvl & Lndscpe 960-17 \-\ CITY OF PALM DESERT PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: APPROVE PAYMENT OF HONORARIUMS TO THREE COLLEGE OF THE DESERT STUDENTS FOR THE DESIGN OF THE CHARGER SCULPTURE TURF REMOVAL AND LANDSCAPING PROJECT IN THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF $2,000 (PROJECT NO. 960-17) SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works DATE: June 8, 2017 CONTENTS: Vicinity Map Recommendation By Minute Motion, approve payment of honorariums to three College of the Desert (COD) students for the design of the Charger Turf Removal and Landscaping Project in the total amount of $2,000 (Project No. 960-17). Funds are available in Account No. 4004650-4391503, Art in Public Places Turf Retrofit. Strategic Plan Objective Removal of the turf surrounding the Charger Sculpture and the redesign of the landscape addresses the Education, and Energy & Sustainability goals outlined in the Strategic Plan Objectives, more particularly as follows: Education — Priority 1: Create and support a community-based Education Coalition in which all necessary community organizations come together to coordinate and focus their efforts on improving measures of student success such as graduation rates and achievement levels. Energy & Sustainability — Priority 1: Reduce per capita consumption of energy and water. Background On October 13, 2016, the City Council approved awarding honorariums in the amounts of $1,000, $600, and $400 to students in the COD School of Agriculture (Horticulture) Landscape Design class who produced the top three designs to remove the turf and install drought-tolerant landscaping in front of the Charger Sculpture. This project was Staff Report Approve Payment of Honorarium to COD Students for Charger Sculpture Landscape Design Page 2 of 2 June 8, 2017 approved in the FY 2016-17 budget; however, the Landscape Design class was not offered at COD until Spring Semester 2017, so staff delayed the project to accommodate the class schedule. A panel consisting of three City staff members reviewed the 16 plans that were submitted by the students. The following students' plans were selected to receive the honorariums: $1,000 to Ignacio Moreno, whose plan will be implemented as the first place selection; $600 to Alex Svoboda for second place; and $400 to Estaban Esqueda for third place.
