problem, and suicide prevention is a national and statewide responsibility;
and
Whereas, suicide is thelOth leading cause of death in the United
States and the 2nd leading cause of death among individuals between the
ages of 10 to 44; and
Whereas, suicide is the only leading cause of death in the United
States that has increased every year for the past decade; and
Whereas, over 90% of the people who die by suicide have a
diagnosable and treatable mental health condition; and
Whereas, the stigma associated with mental health conditions and
suicidality works against suicide prevention by discouraging persons at
risk for suicide from seeking life-saving help and further traumatizes
survivors of suicide loss and people with lived experience of suicide; and
Whereas, through research, education, advocacy and resources
for those who have lost or struggle, organizations such as The American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention are dedicated to saving lives and
bringing hope to those affected by suicide.
Now, Therefore, I, Jan C. Harnik, Mayor of the City of Palm
Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby
Proclaim September 10th to 16th, 2017, as
Suicide Prevention Week
in the City of Palm Desert and encourage citizens to become familiar with
and promote awareness of this public health problem.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand
and have caused the Official Seal of the City of
Palm Desert, California, to be affixed this 7th day
of September, 2017.
