Commission Recommendation At its meeting of September 11, 2017, the Art in Public Places (AIPP) Commission recommended approval of Afghan by Karen and Tony Barone as the public art component for the Barkingham Pet Hotel California with a 5-0-0 vote with Commissioner Darby absent. Strategic Plan The installation of public art helps to create a better community for residents and visitors to Palm Desert. This concept is in line with the Arts & Culture Mini -Vision which states: "Arts and culture give a community its soul. Palm Desert is the cultural core of the Coachella Valley. Cultural tourism drives economic growth in Palm Desert. The community is host to internationally recognized cultural events that bring significant economic benefits to the City. Palm Desert is a leader in arts education, ensuring a well-rounded population that possesses high levels of creativity and critical thinking skills." Staff Report Barkingham Pet Hotel September 28, 2017 Page 2 of 2 Discussion Barkingham Pet Hotel California has selected Afghan by Karen and Tony Barone as the public art component for the project. Karen and Tony Barone are well established sculptors whose sculpture R. Hero is part of the City's Public Art collection and the Polka-Pooka sculptures are part of the current El Paseo Exhibition. Afghan is an existing metal sculpture that depicts a turquoise Afghan dog. The sculpture will be acquired by direct purchase from the artists and installed in front of the project's main building. Staff recommends approval of the artwork. Fiscal Analysis Barkingham Pet Hotel California has paid $10,000 into the Art in Public Places Fund, and the cost of the proposed sculpture is $18,900. Upon approvals from the Art in Public Places Commission and the City Council, and installation of the sculpture, Barkingham Pet Hotel California will be allowed to be reimbursed the $10,000 that was paid into the Art in Public Places Fund. RECOMMEND TO THE CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF AFGHAN BY KAREN AND TONY BARONE AS THE PUBLIC ART COMPONENT FOR BARKINGHAM PET HOTEL CALIFORNIA Ms. Glickman reported that the developer for the Barkingham Pet Hotel California submitted an application for the public art component located at 73650 Dinah Shore Drive, which is a boarding facility for pets. The applicant is proposing a sculpture of an afghan dog entitled Afghan by artists Karen and Tony Barone. The sculpture is an original and will be placed in front of the building. Commissioner Campbell moved to recommend to the City Council approval of Afghan by Karen and Tony Barone as the public art component for Barkingham Pet Hotel California. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Hough and carried 5- 0-0 with Adney, Boren, Campbell, Hough, and Miller voting AYE with Darby ABSENT. 6
