Funds are available in Account No. 1104470-4312000 (Community Development: Conferences, Seminars, and Workshops). Background The American Planning Association (APA) is an independent, non -for -profit educational organization that provides leadership in development of communities. APA provides leadership in the development of vital communities by advocating excellence in planning, promoting education and citizen empowerment, and providing the tools and support necessary to meet the challenges of growth and change. Typically, staff would not attend the National Planning Conference because the APA California Chapter has an annual Planning Conference as well. However, this year the National Planning Chapter is located in Phoenix, Arizona, and will focus on issues that are relevant to Palm Desert including: • "Solar as a Utility," • "Sun Cities: Evolution of Retirement Communities," and • "Changing Demographics: Boomers Downsizing, Minorities and Rising." Staff Report Out -of -State Travel February 11, 2016 Page 2 of 2 There are other conference sessions that will keep staff educated on the "hottest" topics, and provide the latest tools and leading discussions about the planning profession. Fiscal Analvsis The anticipated cost for registration, transportation, and travel related expenses will be approximately $2,250. Funds are available in the Fiscal Year 15/16 budget; there is no fiscal impact created by this request.
