CITY OF PALM DESERT
CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE
STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: AUTHORIZATION TO DECLARE THE CITY POLICE MOTOR UNIT NO.
873 (A 2009 HONDA MOTORCYCLE) AS SURPLUS AND PROCEED
WITH DISPOSAL VIA AUCTION.
SUBMITTED BY: Stephen Y. Aryan, Risk Manager
DATE: March 10, 2016
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, declare the City's 2009 Honda Motorcycle Police Motor
(V.I.N. JH2SC51799K600145/License No. 3001970) as surplus and authorize
auctioning this vehicle by Ken Porter Auctions (Carson, CA).
Commission Recommendation
The Palm Desert Public Safety Commission recommended the City Council approve staff's
recommendation to surplus Police Department Motor Unit No. 873.
Background
On August 13, 2015, Palm Desert Police Motor Unit No. 873 was taken to Honda of Redlands
because it was making an unusual sound. Upon listening to the sound, the Service Manager
advised that the problem was most likely a knocking rod, but it would cost approximately $2,000
to tear down the engine to confirm the diagnosis. The Police Department requests this unit be
designated as surplus and anticipates purchasing a new motorcycle soon to replace this unit.
Fiscal Analvsis
Should the City Council concur with staff's recommendation any funds collected from the
auction will be deposited in the City's General Fund. Please note that Ken Porter Auctions
previously collected a 5% commission and charges for vehicle transportation.
