Recommendation
Provide direction about the Summer 2016 Regular City Council Meeting Schedule - determine
whether or not to observe the traditional schedule of conducting the first regular meeting in July
and the second regular meeting in August, or an alternative to this scheduling, such as
conducting the first regular meeting in July and first regular meeting in August (cancelling the
second meetings in each of the months).
Strateaic Plan Obiective
None - this request represents conduct of the City's routine Municipal Affairs.
Backaround
The Palm Desert City Council, as do other Coachella Valley and Southern California City Councils, typically
takes a small break from regular meetings each year during the months of July and August. Traditionally
for Palm Desert, the City Council has held its first regular meeting in July and then the second regular
meeting in August (cancelling the second regular meeting in July and first regular meeting in August). This
allows both Councilmembers and City staff to schedule themselves such that they do not impact the routine
of case consideration and staff report preparation during this time. Having the scheduling done in advance
provides everyone with notice of the upcoming summer meetings in order to plan accordingly. Further, it
has always been the understanding that if the need arose during the summer break, either a meeting could
be held on the regular meeting day and/or a special meeting could be called to take care of a matter(s)
requiring action prior to resuming the regular schedule, providing a quorum of the Council was available for
this purpose.
Therefore, your direction is sought at this time in order to prepare for the summer schedule, should you
decide to observe a break in regular meetings again this year as has been done in the past.
Fiscal Analvsis
No direct fiscal impact for this matter.
