INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
To: John M. Wohlmuth, City Manager
From: Tony Bagato, Principal Planner
Date: March 20, 2015
Subject: Single -use Plastic Bag Education Program Update
The purpose of this memo is provide an update related to the City's effort to educate the
businesses and the public about the single -use plastic bag ordinance that will take
effect April 1, 2015, for large retailers and grocery stores.
Staff has been working with D&B Visions, a contractor who is being paid from AB 939
Recycle Funds, to contact all the retail and grocery stores about the ordinance that will
prohibit single -use plastic bags and the promote the City's Reusable Bag Program. As
of March, D&B Visions has contacted 110 businesses to inform them of the ordinance
requirements.
In addition, D&B Visions has provided information to the public by setting up a table
booth and distributing free reusable bags at Reusable Bag Promotion Events in front of
14 businesses. To date, approximately 1,700 reusable bags have been provided to
shoppers. The overall response from the businesses hosting the events has been very
positive and they are glad to have the City representative providing education and the
free reusable bags.
Lastly, staff has provided free Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) posters and flyers to
businesses to educate the shoppers about the new ordinance change and promote the
use of reusable bags in Palm Desert.
I have attached a photo of the table used for the event, the calendar of the dates of the
events, and the posters being used for the education program. If you have any
questions or comments, please contact me at Extension 480.
