SCHEDULE (JULY AND AUGUST MEETINGS).

Recommendation
Provide direction about the Summer 2015 Regular City Council Meeting Schedule -
determine whether or not to observe the traditional schedule of conducting the first regular
meeting in July and the second regular meeting in August, or an alternative to this
scheduling, such as conducting the first regular meeting in July and first regular meeting in
August (cancelling the second meetings in each of the months).
Background
The Palm Desert City Council, as do other Coachella Valley and Southern California City Councils, typically
takes a small break from regular meetings each year during the months of July and August. Traditionally
for Palm Desert, the City Council has held its first regular meeting in July and then the second regular
meeting in August (cancelling the second regular meeting in July and first regular meeting in August). This
allows both Councilmembers and City staff to schedule themselves such that they do not impact the routine
of case consideration and staff report preparation during this time. Having the scheduling done in advance
provides everyone with notice of the upcoming summer meetings in order to plan accordingly. Further, it
has always been the understanding that if the need arose during the summer break, either a meeting could
be held on the regular meeting day and/or a special meeting could be called to take care of a matter (or
matters) requiring action prior to resuming the regular schedule, providing a quorum of the Council was
available for this purpose.
Therefore, your direction is sought at this time in order to prepare for the summer schedule, should you
decide to observe a break in regular meetings again this year as has been done in the past.
Fiscal Analysis
No direct fiscal impact for this matter.

Early Morning Work Out -Staying fit despite the desert's sweltering summer heat can be a challenge with many activities moving
indoors during June, July, andAugust. The dedicated participants of the Desert Recreation District's Balanced Training Boot Camp at
Freedom Park (pictured) have their own solution to beat the heat. They rise before the sun, meeting at5:15 a.m., three days a week, for
workouts that include cardio strength training, body weight exercises, core conditioning, yoga, sand and hill training, obstacle course
circuits, and more.

Make a Splash - The Palm Desert Aquatic Center (pictured) offers the desert's coolest way to beat the heat
while getting great exercise. Swimming is a total -body workout, engaging muscles that can be missed with
otheractivities. Swimming also gives yourjoints a break from the dailydamage that running and jumping can
do to your body. Located in Civic Center Park offMagnesio Falls Drive, the Aquatic Center includes three pools,
diving boards, slides, and play features and offers lap swimming as well as a variety ofwater fitness classes.
