ART IN PUBLIC PLACES COMMISSION
MINUTES
Wednesday, March 11, 2015
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Boren convened the meeting at 9:03 a.m.

III. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
City Clerk, Rachelle Klassen, swore in new Commission member
Megan Miller prior to the meeting.
At the request of the Mayor, a group photo of the Art in Public
Places Commission (including liaisons) was taken for the files and
historical record.

IV. CONSENT CALENDAR
Minutes of the regular meeting held on January 14, 2015.
Commissioner Hough moved to approve the Minutes of
January 14, 2015. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Darby
and carried 5-1-1 with Boren, Bussing, Darby, Hough, and Thompson
voting AYE, Megan Miller ABSTAINING, and Lesley Miller ABSENT
(during the vote).
V. DISCUSSION ITEMS
A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION — Mayor
Susan Marie Weber
No report.
B. PLANNING COMMISSION REPORT — Ken Stendell
Mr. Stendell reported that the Planning Commission
approved the following.
A telecommunications tower on El Paseo behind Staples; a
2.27 acre parcel map in Ironwood Country Club that was
subdivided into three lots; a 674 square foot casita on a five
acre hillside parcel.
Mario Gonzales of GHA asked for an amendment to the
General Plan for the Millennium Specific Plan of 152 acres
that are being reallocated to housing, industrial, and
commercial office professional buildings located at Gerald
Ford Drive and Portola Avenue.
C. ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION (ARC) REPORT
— John Vuksic
Ms. Aylaian reported that the Fairfield Inn on Highway 111
that caught on fire will be converted and rebuilt as a
SpringHill Suites. The proposed design had been brought
before the Architectural Review Commission (ARC) several
times, as the building needed exterior fagade modification.
The design was preliminary approved at the most recent
ARC meeting.

VII. NEW BUSINESS
A. CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSALS FOR EXHIBITION IN
THE PALM DESERT COMMUNITY GALLERY FOR THE
2015/2016 SEASON
Ms. Schwartz reported that every year staff publicizes the
call for artists to submit proposals to show artwork in the
Palm Desert Community Gallery. There are five exhibitions
a year, one being the Student Art and Essay Contest which
leaves four available shows for Coachella Valley and
surrounding area residents. She received submissions from
the following 17 artists. Alejandro Olmo, Carol Brudo,
Dennis Johnson, Gary Mergelkamp, Irene Ryan Maloney,
Jerome Walczak, Joyce Kingman, Kim Uhlik, Mark Kaufman,
Patricia Kodet, Paul Dove, Paul Hamel, Randall Weidner,
Rita Steffen, Robert Quintana, Veronique Branger, and Judy
Mandel.
After much consideration and discussion, the Commission
concurred that the following artists will exhibit their artwork in
the Palm Desert Community Gallery for the 2015/2016
season. Alejandro Olmo, Joyce Kingman, Veronique
Branger as one show; Irene Ryan Maloney and Kim Uhlik as
one show; Paul Hamel and Randal Weidner as one show;
and Dennis Johnson and Robert Quintana as one show.
Commissioner Thompson moved to accept Alejandro
Olmo, Joyce Kingman, Veronique Branger, Irene Ryan
Maloney, Kim Uhlik, Paul Hamel, Randal Weidner, Dennis
Johnson, and Robert Quintana as the artists who will exhibit in
the Palm Desert Community Gallery for the 201512016 season.
Motion was seconded by Commissioner Bussing and carried
7-0-0 with Boren, Bussing, Darby, Hough, Miller, Miller, and
Thompson voting AYE.

IX. OLD BUSINESS

X. PROJECT STATUS REPORTS
A. Palm Desert Community Gallery
Ms. Schwartz Glickman reported that the current exhibition,
Coachella Valley: Inside and Out with art by Moira
Johannessen, Linda Kottke, and John Ressler, has been
well received. Ken Stendell told the Commission that he met
with the artists and purchased two paintings from the
exhibition.
The next gallery exhibition is the Student Art and Essay
Contest with the theme Palm Desert Through My Eyes. The
entry deadline is Thursday, April 9, and the Awards
Ceremony is Wednesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council
Chamber.
B. Docent Program
The docent program was very busy in February with 18
private tours that were attended by approximately 180
people.
Ms. Schwartz Glickman met with the Librarian from the Palm
Desert Library to discuss ideas of how to increase the
publicity about the artwork that is located at the Library and
how to increase the amount of attendees on the tours of the
artwork.
C. Public Art Documentary Film Series
Ms. Schwartz Glickman reported that she was excited that
Ginny Ruffner was the featured speaker for the film A Not So
Still Life that screened on February as part of the Public Art
Documentary Film Series.
The film The Gateway Arch will show on March 19. The
speaker for the Q&A is Jennifer Henning, Public Arts and
Special Projects Coordinator for the City of Palm Springs.

The final film, Tim's Vermeer, will screen on April 16 and
Lisa Soccio, Assistant Professor/Gallery Director at College
of the Desert, will the speaker for the Q&A.
XI. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. STAFF
Commissioner Hough reported that the Andrea Zittel
exhibition will open on March 17 at the Architecture and
Design Center.
Chairperson Boren announced that the Heritage Festival is
being held at the Coachella Valley History Museum on
Saturday, March 28, and handed out rack cards about the
festival.
B. COMMISSION REPORTS
No report.
XI. ADJOURNMENT
Commissioner Thompson moved to adjourn the meeting at 10:26
a.m. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Darby.
