Authorize the purchase of two complete traffic signal controller cabinet assemblies in the amount of $49,321.44. Funding is available for these purchases using Capital Project Reserve funds from Account No. 400-4438-433-400,1 and Measure A funds from Account No. 213-4383- 433-4001. Strategic Plan Objective This project will meet objectives outlined in Envision Palm Desert Forward Together in Tourism & Marketing by improving access to retail developments while mitigating traffic congestion. Background Two Public Works Capital Improvement Projects are currently in the bidding phase and are expected to be constructed this summer. The two projects are entitled Portola Avenue at Fred Waring Drive - Free Right Turn (Project No. 633-07), and Highway 111 Right Turn to Westbound Fred Waring Drive (Project No. 659-14). Project locations are shown on the attached vicinity map exhibit. Both of these projects require the installation of new traffic signal controller cabinet assemblies. Staff Report Purchase of Two Traffic Signal Controller Cabinet Assemblies Page 2 of 2 May 28, 2015 Staff is requesting the authorization to purchase the traffic signal controller assemblies in advance of the award/execution of a contract to construct the project improvements. A traffic signal controller cabinet assembly is a long lead item and can take ten weeks or longer for delivery once ordered. Delivery of the controller cabinets at the earliest possible date will expedite the construction phase of each project. Additionally, there will be a cost savings to the City as the contractor's "mark-up costs" will not be applied to the purchase of the controller cabinets. Econolite Group, Inc., is the sole source provider of traffic signal controller equipment that is compatible with the City's central signal control system. Staff requested and received quotes from Econolite Group, Inc., in the amount of $24,660.72 for the purchase and delivery of each complete traffic signal controller cabinet assembly, for a total cost of $49,321.44.
