STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: REQUEST FOR APPROVAL TO SURPLUS FOUR CITY OF PALM
DESERT POLICE DEPARTMENT SEGWAY UNITS.
SUBMITTED BY: Stephen Y. Aryan, Risk Manager
DATE: July 8, 2015
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, approve the surplus of four Palm Desert Police Department
Segway Units as indicated in this report.
Commission Action
The Palm Desert Public Safety Commission recommended approval of this item at their
May 13, 2015, meeting.
Background
The City of Palm Desert Police Department currently has four Segways vehicles as
noted below:

These units are several years old, have exceeded their expected lifespan, and are
outdated technology. The Police Department also indicates that officers have been
injured operating these units, which are also currently in disrepair. None of the four
vehicles are currently functioning and have not been operated for more than five years.
The Segway Company advised staff that minimal repairs just to replace batteries and
refurbish will exceed $5,000 and unforeseen repairs could drive costs even higher.
Additionally, because of the time that has passed since their use, there are currently no
officers currently trained to operate them. Staff concurs with the Police Department's
recommendation to surplus these four units.

Fiscal Impact
Staff will explore the feasibility of auctioning the units to potentially receive some
