HomeMy WebLinkAboutPresentation - Suicide Prevention WeekWhereas, suicide is a national public mental health problem and is
the1Oth leading cause of death in the United States and the 2nd leading
cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 to 24; and
Whereas, suicide is the only top 10 cause of death in the United
States that has increased every year for the past decade; and
Whereas, over 90% of the people who die by suicide have a
diagnosable and treatable mental illness; and
Whereas, the stigma associated with mental illness works against
suicide prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from
seeking life-saving help and further traumatizes survivors of suicide; and
Whereas, through research, educational programs, advocacy and
bereavement services, organizations such as The American Foundation
for Suicide Prevention are dedicated to reducing the frequency of suicide
attempts and deaths, and the pain of survivors affected by suicides of
loved ones.
