Recommendation
By Minute Motion, declare Palm Desert Visitor Center retail fixtures,
cabinets, office furniture, equipment and miscellaneous items as
surplus, authorize the sale and disposal as proposed, and transfer
any unsold retail inventory to promotional items.
Background
The retail fixtures, cabinets, equipment and miscellaneous items on the attached list are
surplus, and will no longer be needed following the closure of the Palm Desert Visitor
Center on September 30, 2015. The following recommendation is made for sale or
disposal at the Palm Desert Visitor Center.
Items 1 through 12
The following retail fixtures, furnishings and cabinets were either special ordered for, or
custom-made as part of the tenant improvements at the Visitor Center. It is
recommended to surplus, set a minimum price and sell these items to the highest bidder
in a two-day sale on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 at the Palm Desert
Visitor Center. Buyers purchasing built-in cabinetry will be asked to remove their
purchases within 10 days of the sale.
Items 13 through 26
The following items are commonly available retail supplies, fixtures and equipment. It is
recommended to surplus the following items, group them into lots where appropriate

and sell them at a price set by the City in a two-day sale on Friday, October 2 and
Saturday, October 3 at the Visitor Center. A price list for these items will be prepared in
advance for anyone who may inquire about them and to enhance attendance at the
sale.
Items 27 through 37
The following items are examples of miscellaneous retail supplies, retail decor, display
props and seasonal decorations. It is recommended to surplus the following items,
group them into lots and sell them at a price set by the City in a two-day sale on Friday,
October 2 and Saturday, October 3 at the Visitor Center.
Any fixtures and equipment remaining unsold following the two-day sale will be donated
to local charities, or disposed of.
Office Furniture and Equipment
Most of the Visitor Center's office furniture, including a desk, chairs, file cabinets and
computers will continue to be used by the Visitor Center staff or within the Economic
Development department. Extra phones and computer equipment will be returned to the
Information Technology department for reuse. Furniture that is no longer needed will be
made available to other City departments for their use.
Any excess furniture that is not claimed by other departments prior to the clearance sale
will be added to the sale. Any fixtures and equipment remaining unsold following the
two-day sale will be donated to local charities, or disposed of.
Retail Merchandise
Substantial efforts are being made to reduce the retail inventory at the Visitor Center,
but it is likely that there will be retail merchandise remaining unsold at the September 30
closure. It is recommended to transfer the value of these items from Cost of Goods Sold
(#1104419-4538012) to promotional items for use by the Economic Development
department.
Fiscal Analysis
Approval of the request to surplus retail fixtures and office furniture will generate funds
that will go back into the City's general fund. Funds to promote the sale are available in
the approved budget for the Visitor Center.
It is estimated that approximately $9,000.00 in retail inventory will be transferred to a
promotional category and no longer be generating revenue as part of the eliminated
retail program.
