Recommendation
By Minute Motion, appoint Mr. James Moran of Westin Desert Willow Villas to the Hotel
and Signature Events Committee, filling the unexpired term of Jeff Kokinacis.
Background
City Council appointed Jeff Kokinacis to the Hotel and Signature Event Committee at its
April 24, 2014 meeting. Mr. Kokinacis was never present nor sworn in, leaving a
vacancy on the committee. Mr. Moran is the general manager for Westin Desert Willow
Villas Palm Desert. He has expressed a strong interest in serving on this committee
and has served on similar committees.
Current Hotel and Signature Events Committee by-laws state that the Committee shall
be comprised of no more than seven (7) members representing a large hotel, a small
hotel/motel, and a professional within the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Appointment
of Mr. Moran would fulfill the by-laws requirement of a member representing a large
hotel.

Staff recommends City Council appoint Mr. Moran to the Palm Desert Hotel and
Signature Event Committee to fill the unexpired term of Jeff Kokinacis, through
December 2017.

Having been a resident of the Coachella Valley since 1978 and in the Hospitality business in the valley since 1986, 1
feel that I am uniquely qualified to help partner with the City to help grow the Hospitality and Tourism industry, as
well as enhance the experience of its residents. Doing both requires a well thought out strategy and plan to
execute. I have been a General Manager with Westin Hotels and Resorts for the past 10 years, both in Rancho
Mirage, and for the past 5 years, The City of Palm Desert. Palm Desert has always been a City on the move in
terms of "firsts," giving it a reputation as a well -run and visionary City and I feel that partnering with Hospitality
Professionals, will only add to the "value" proposition, that the City offers both residents and visitors.
