most respected voluntary health organization since 1913 and has funded
research which has contributed to every known method for detecting cancer
and techniques for treating cancer. The 5-year survival rate for all cancers
diagnosed in 2004-2010 was 68%, up from 49% in 1975-1977.
Whereas, The American Cancer Society is a voluntary community
based coalition of local citizens dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major
health problem through financial support and education awareness.
Whereas, the RELAY FOR LIFE event financially benefits The
American Cancer Society's research and support programs, and educationally
benefits our local citizens. In the last 5 years, the RELAY FOR LIFE of Palm
Desert has raised over $436,000 for The American Cancer Society for locally
supported programs.
Now, Therefore, I, Susan Marie Weber, Mayor of the City of
Palm Desert, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby Proclaim the
month of October as
RELAY FOR LIFE MONTH
in the City of Palm Desert and ask our citizens to join us in recognizing and
supporting this worthy organization benefitting the lives of so many.
