REQUEST: Approval of the Palm Desert Charter Middle School 2022 Panther 5K
Recommendation
By Minute Motion:
1. Approve the Palm Desert Charter Middle School Panther 5K scheduled for
Sunday, January 23, 2022; and
2. Approve road closures on El Paseo between Highway 74 and Portola Avenue.
Strategic Plan Obiective
Approval of Palm Desert Charter Middle School's 2022 Panther 5K would help address
the following priority as specified in the 2013-2033 Strategic Plan, Envision Palm Desert
— Forward Together:
• Parks and Recreation Priority 3: Make recreational and exercise opportunities
available in all public spaces.
Background Analysis
Palm Desert Charter Middle School (PDCMS) is requesting to hold its annual Panther 5K
on Sunday, January 23, 2022, utilizing the City's certified course on El Paseo with road
closures between Highway 74 and Portola Avenue. Over the past several years the
Panther 5K has successful raised $110,000 for the school while encouraging adults,
students, and families to participate in a healthy activity.
The event will continue to utilize the City's certified 5K course with the start/finish line and
main event placed on the south side of El Paseo at San Pablo. Both the north and south
lanes of El Paseo between Portola and Highway 74 will be closed during the event.
Additionally, PDCMS will once again work with The Gardens on El Paseo management
on approval to place portable restrooms, sinks, and trash/recycle bins in the El Paseo
Village parking lot. They will continue to be required to notify nearby residents on San
Pablo in advance of the event. Upon approval of the 2022 event, staff will ensure that all
these conditions are met. As with previous years, safety precautions will include hard
closures at all major intersections and sworn police officers at designated locations along
the route. It is anticipated that all roads will be open by 11 a.m. Staff will also work with

PDCMS and the El Paseo Parking and Business Improvement District to do outreach to
the businesses prior to the event, informing them about the street closure.
PDCMS is aware that if COVID-19 restrictions or any other type of State or County
restrictions are in place at the time of the event, the in -person race will have to be
canceled or postponed. PCMS is also aware and in agreement to follow any guidelines
in place by the State of County at the time of the event.
Fiscal Analysis
A sponsorship in the amount of $2,500 was previously approved by the City Council as
part of the City -Produced and City -Sponsored events budgets at the meeting on June 24,
2021. No further impact to the City's Budget is expected.
