CITY OF PALM DESERT P PARKS AND RECREATION t not !• %gyp — STAFF REPORT To: Parks and Recreation Commission From: Jay Niemczak, Parks Facilities Manager Date: October 21, 2008 Subject: Civic Center Tennis Parking During baseball and football seasons in the Civic Center Park, the parking areas near the ball fields get quite congested. The Public Works Department suggested that the dirt area west of the tennis courts be converted to parking stalls. In early October, Parks Staff removed and relocated a 6" water main that ran through the area. Following the main line relocation, the Public Works Department began the demolition of the existing curb and gutter. The week of October 6, 2008, crews poured and finished the concrete. The concrete should be sufficiently cured for use and striped by the week of October 20. Attached are pictures of the construction project. In early spring of this year, Parks Staff secured bids for the project. The bid was awarded to Shade Structures Inc., and the contractor submitted plans to the Department of Building and Safety. Plans were approved, and installation was scheduled for early summer. During the installation, the contractor found that the tennis court light footings would not allow installation of the structures per the plans. The contractor then submitted revised plans to the Building and Safety Department. The new plans were approved, and the new shade structures were ordered by the Contractor. The new shade structures for the tennis courts at the Civic Center Park were installed the week of October 6, 2008. Benches will be installed beneath the structures. The portable shaded benches currently at Civic Center will be moved to the Cahuilla Hills tennis courts. Attached are pictures of the construction and the completed project.
