The testing results qualify SunVault ESS units for exceptions from certain installation requirements in fire code compliance beginning July 1, 2021 in California and in other jurisdictions. This Tech Note explains the SunVault ESS energy ratings, provides the test background information, and references fire code requirements where these UL 9540A test results should be considered for an exemption or an exception. 2.0 SunVault ESS and Aggregate Energy Ratings SunVault Model Number Description Rated Energy SV-BASE13-12-A Base ESS unit 13 kWh SV-ENERGY13-12-A Energy expansion ESS unit 13 kWh 2.1 Base and Energy Expansion Systems The base SunPower SunVault installation consists of one SV-BASE13-12-A ESS unit rated at 13 kWh (paired with one SunVault Hub+). Additional 13 kWh ESS units (SV-ENERGY13-12-A) can be added to increase the aggregate energy of the SunVault installation in 13 kWh increments. For example, a SunVault installation that combines the 13 kWh SV- BASE13-12-A ESS unit with a 13 kWh SV-ENERGY13-12-A ESS energy expansion unit would have an aggregate energy rating of 26 kWh. Title: Tech Note - SunVault™ Completion of Large-Scale Fire Testing (UL 9540A), 540838 RevA Date: 07/06/2021 Page 2 of 4 Form: 001-51499 Rev I Technical Notification In a given installation, combining 13 kWh SV-BASE13-12-A ESS units with 13 kWh SV-ENERGY13-12-A units provides the ability to expand both the power and the energy of that particular system. Where the local fire code prescribes a maximum energy rating requirement for individual ESS units and for aggregate energy in a specific indoor or outdoor installation location, the SunVault individual ESS rating is 13 kWh and the aggregate energy rating is a multiple of 13 kWh which expands incrementally depending on the quantity of ESS units in the system, and does not exceed 104 kWh. 3.0 SunVault UL 9540A Standard Compliance The large-scale fire testing was conducted and reported by UL in accordance with UL 9540A Edition 4 2019, at their fire testing laboratory in Northbrook, IL. The testing and reporting were completed under UL Project #4789520191.8 (see Section 4.6 of this Tech Note). UL designed the test setup and data collection so that the results could be judged against the UL 9540A unit-level performance criteria for both indoor and outdoor wall-mounted residential ESS units. The SunVault test setup comprised three individual ESS units which represented all SunVault ESS models and which were wall mounted with 6″ (152 mm) separation distance between each unit. The center unit contained a battery module with heaters installed on a centrally located cell. This cell was externally heated at a rate of 4–7°C/minute until the cell exhibited a condition called thermal runaway. The test instrumentation recorded the effects of the resulting thermal event in accordance with UL 9540A data collection requirements. Note: UL 9540A test setup requirements prevented testing both wall-mounted and floor-mounted systems in a single test. Wall-mounted systems are considered to be worst case with respect to complying with the UL 9540A performance criteria, and for this reason we believe the test results from the report can be applied to floor- mounted ESS units as well. 4.0 Application to Fire Code Requirements SunVault systems must be installed according to applicable sections of the effective local fire code. Fire codes and fire code sections referenced in this document are intended to inform about requirements which may be excepted or addressed by the large-scale fire testing results. The inclusion of fire codes or fire code sections in this Tech Note does not necessarily imply applicability to all or to any SunVault installations. 4.1 ESS Spacing Exceptions UL determined that a thermal event initiated in one SunVault ESS unit did not propagate to the adjacent ESS units when the units were installed with 6″ (152 mm) of separation on either side of the initiating ESS unit (see pg. 4 of the report). The initiated thermal event was contained within the initiating battery module inside the initiating ESS unit, and no flaming was observed during the test (pg. 4). These results qualify SunVault ESS units for exception from the prescribed 36″ (914 mm) ESS spacing requirements that are part of many local fire codes. The exception permits SunVault installation with 6″ (152 mm) minimum separation distance between ESS units. Title: Tech Note - SunVault™ Completion of Large-Scale Fire Testing (UL 9540A), 540838 RevA Date: 07/06/2021 Page 3 of 4 Form: 001-51499 Rev I Technical Notification 4.2 Non-Combustible Construction UL determined that SunVault complies with the UL 9540A performance criterion for installation in locations with combustible constructions (pg. 5). This performance criterion requires that wall surface temperatures do not rise to greater than 97°C (174.6°F) above ambient. The maximum wall surface temperature rise achieved during SunVault UL 9540A testing was just 54°C (97.2°F) above ambient (pg. 22). The test result was achieved with the ESS units installed on black-painted plywood which is combustible and can exhibit a faster temperature rise when compared to gypsum. Consider SunVault’s compliance with the UL 9540A performance criterion for installation on combustible construction when evaluation construction requirements for ESS installation areas. Wall temperature was measured at 6″ intervals along a vertical line offset 6″ from the edge of the initiating ESS unit. The maximum temperature measured at each interval along this line was 10°C (18°F) above ambient (pg. 22). The maximum surface temperature of an adjacent ESS unit located 6″ from the initiating ESS unit was 9°C (16.2°F) above ambient (pg. 22). Additionally, no flaming or explosion hazards were observed. These observations show that occupant egress would not be affected from doors or windows located 6″ (152 mm) from the edge of an ESS. No flaming or explosion hazards were observed during the test. Automatic sprinkler systems or other methods of automatic fire suppression are not required for SunVault to comply with the UL 9540A unit-level performance criteria. The reported maximum allowable spacing is the greatest spacing, rounded down to the nearest rafter spacing increment, for which the demand/capacity ratios are less than or equal to 1.0. • These tables do not consider the strength of the supporting roof structure. In areas of low snow load, the weight of the array is often considered to offset the design live load of the roof, since personnel and equipment cannot be placed on top of the array. It is recommended to stagger attachment points, as shown in Figure 1, to evenly distribute loads to the rafters. Figure 1 • These tables assume that each module is installed centered over a pair of rails, as shown in Figure 2(a). In cases where one rail is closer to the midpoint of the module, as shown in Figure 2(b), adjustments to the spacing may be required. Laboratory Tested 2,359 lbs Vertical Pullout! 808 lbs Side Axial Pullout!* Benefits of the FastJack® • Removable post makes installation on existing roofs/retrofit quick and easy (refer to the illustration to the right) • Patented design locates the lag bolt directly under the stanchion providing superior strength values • Fast & easy to install - saves time and labor costs • Precision machined from extruded aluminum, there are no welds to corrode or break • Significantly lighter than steel for installer convenience and reduced shipping costs. • Integrated drill guide insures perfect pilot holes every time - minimizes the possibility of splitting roof rafters • Base design allows virtually any roof flashing to install flat on the roof deck Serrated base grips the roof deck to prevent the base from moving while installing the lag bolt Commercial FastJack® also available (rated at 4,250 lbs.) Flashable Roof Stanchion The patented design of the FastJack® can be easily expressed as the most innovative, efficient and cost-effective tool of it's kind! Between the precision CNC machined base and stanchion along with strict engineering and material standards, the FastJack® has been laboratory tested to provide 2,359 pounds of strength using only a single lag bolt (included)! Four Sizes Available! *Using 1ea. 5/16" x 3-1/2" Lag Bolt RAF T E R Easy installation of flashings on existing roof-tops See reverse for installation theory Standard & Oatey® Flashings slip over the base and under the delicate shingle The post can be installed through the top of the flashing © Professional Solar Products, Inc.
