HomeMy WebLinkAboutPublic Comment - Midblock Crosswalk Letter of Support to Council - Jan2023 - SignedJanuary 19, 2023 Dear Mayor Kelly: I'm writing on behalf of the Board of Directors of the El Paseo Parking and Business Improvement District to encourage the Palm Desert City Council to consider making specific changes to El Paseo. With valuable input from City staff, the Board canvassed the members of the District to develop a consensus on this topic. With that feedback in mind, the Board would like to urge the City to consider the following enhancements to El Paseo: • Install two additional raised midblock crosswalks on El Paseo between Ocotillo Drive and Lupine Lane. The first would be between Ocotillo and Sage, aligned with the existing breezeway between buildings. The second would be between Sage and Lupine. • If feasible, add a third raised midblock crosswalk between Lupine Lane and San Pablo Avenue, and a fourth raised midblock crosswalk between San Luis Rey and Portola. • Minimize loss of on -street parking and consider landscaped bulb -outs with the midblock crosswalks. • Consider automated pedestrian detection with the crosswalks. • Consider pavers for the surface of the crosswalks. • Consider a Barnes dance (pedestrian -only traffic signal phase) at San Pablo and El Paseo. We anticipate that the City will conduct outreach with businesses and property owners as part of any such project, and the Board would be happy to help with this. However, we trust that any detailed design would be determined by the City, considering the presence of utilities, fire hydrants, light poles, landscaping, dining decks, and other existing infrastructure. Sincerely, Park 1.14r&4f, Patrick Klein President, EPPBID Board of Directors
