Located in what is commonly known as the 'Pinard' Building. PURPOSE: The restaurant currently has a marquee entrance style awning over the front entryway and the restaurant is in a location where 'high visibility' is extremely important as the location does not afford pedestrain traffic. This awning will be placed over the rear door of the business. The awning will increase the exposure of the business as well as provide a unified look for the front and rear entries. AWNING TYPE: The proposal is for a Long Dome style awning with no upright or ground supports. AWNING SIZE: 6'0.5" wide X 3'2.5" height X 2"0" projection. There will be no free hanging valance. FABRIC/COLOR: Client choice is to use Awning Sunbrella red. This is the same fabric that was used for the front awning. The fabric is 100% acrylic which is colorfast and extremely durable. FIRE MARSHALL: As previously outlined by the C.D.F. Fire Marshall, the size of this awning is under that requiring special flame retardant certified fabric. ARTXik TERING: The lettering "A Touch of Mama's" will be placed strthe face of the awning, the word "Restaurant" will be platly below in smaller letter type. All lettering will be in r;. whiet against the red awning fabric. We calculate that the tote footage of the lettering, "A Touch of Mama's Restaurant" wil2 square feet. This computation is based on the attached letiagram with the "A" in "A Touch of..." being 4.27 inches hick,R" in "Restaurant" being 3.75 inches high, the space between th$ two lines of print being 2 inches. The total length of the lettering line "A Touch of Mama's" being 3'6" long. CONSTRUCTION: The awning frames will be constructed of tubular steel welded and/or slip fit jointed. Minimum tubing specification is 1"O.D./ 20ga. MOUNTING: The awning will be mounted to the building front using 'Jiffy' style clips (fasteners) and 1/4" lag bolts of 2.5" minimum length. PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY: The awning will project over the public sidewalk, however, no ground supports will be used. The awning will increase the exposure of the business and serve as a visual 'draw'. The other tenants and the landlord feel that this awning will stimulate activity benefiting the entire building. AWNINGS TYPE: The proposal is for a 'marquee entrance style'awning with no upright ground supports. AWNING SIZE: 3'6" wide X 2'9" height (3'0" ovall front height with curved lower front bar.) 9'8" ovall projection. (Projecting 3,0" from building facia.) There will be no freehanging valance. FABRIC/COLOR: Client chose to use Awning ultra Red with white Ultra as the oval on the awning front. This is a new acrylic coated fabric which is color fast and extremely durable. The material is well suited to being illuminated at night to present a striking 'glow effect.' FIRE MARSHALL: As previously outlined by the C.D.F. Fire Marshall, the size of this awning is under that requiring special flame retardant certified fabric. ARTWORK/LETTERING: The logo of 'MAMA' will be in an oval on the awning front (see attached drawing showing style and colors.) The logotype "A Touch Of Mama's " will be curved around this oval. Lettering "A Touch Of Mama's" will be straight on both awning sides. See diagram for sizes of lettering. The lettering of the front will have 'shadow' lines and the lettering on the sides will be plain. Lettering will be in white ink: set against the red awning fabric. We calculate that the total square footage of the three areas of signage will be 13.5 Sq. Ft. The lateral shop frontage is +20 Ft. CONSTRUCTION: The awning frames will be constructed of tubular steel welded and/or slap fit jointed. Minimum tubing specification is 1"O.D./ 20ga. The awning will be supported from the front edge of the building facia (in a manner similar to Polo Ralph Lauren Home Center.) There will be no upright poles. MOUNTING: The awning will be mounted to the building front using 'Jiffy' style clips (fasteners) and 1/4" lag bolts of 2.5" minimum length. The awning will attach to the front of the building facia by means of a plate and lag bolts mounted to a threaded rod attached to the center top projecting rafter of the awning. GROUND CLEARANCE: No part of the awning will be lower than 8'0" above the existing terrain. PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY: The awning will project over the public sidewalk, however, no ground supports will be used. Commission had no objections to the color of the sign. Commissioner Holden felt that staff could approve proposed sign: when revisions are submitted. Moved by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Martin, to approve the final drawings subject to conditions as follows: 1. That applicant submit "as built" plan of east elevation. 2. That proposed sign have at least 6 inches between parapet and top of sign. Motion carried 4-0. IV. DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. CASE NO: 244 C APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): PORTALS, 83-741 Hopi Avenue, Indio, CA 92201 for "TOUCH OF MAMA'S". NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval of plans for awning over door. LOCATION: 74-063 Highway 111, Palm Desert ZONE: C-1 S.P. This case was approved et the last meeting with the condition that the proposed awning be changed from red to rust. Applicant requested that commission reconsider its decision. Commissioner Leung expressed concern and felt that it would make the building look oversized. In addition, if other units in the building also want awnings it could pose a problem. Commission Martin said the overhang was no problem but he would like the color to be changed from red to rust. Mr. Diaz noted that the awning might be of some benefit from sun exposure. Moved by Commissioner Martin, seconded by Commissioner Gregory to approve with the following condition. That the color be changed from red to rust. Carrried 3-0-1, Commissioner Leung opposing. 2.
