ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE ROOM 73-510 FRED WARING DRIVE, PALM DESERT, CA 92260 I. CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Lily Kim convened the meeting at 6 p.m. 11. ROLL CALL Members Present: Lily Kim, Chair Tim Fitzpatrick, Vice Chair Zachary Berenbaum Alan Cho Daphnie Driza Kyna Huang Erin Kulas (arrived at 6:07 p.m.) Teana Ross Todd Shaw Members Absent: Umair Ahmad Ismail Haile Jacqueline Scibona Alternates Present: Rick Post Nelly Valencia Alternates Absent: Also Present: Amy Lawrence, Advisor/Recording Secretary Jan Harnik, Palm Desert City Council Mike Veto, Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services Valerie Ward, Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services Katheryn Berenbaum Georgie Jeffrey Audrey Parker Ill. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 8, 2019 IV. PRESENTATIONS 0 A. Presentation by Mike Veto with Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services on Recycling and Plastics Awareness Mike Veto and Valerie Ward with Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services provided a presentation on recycling and plastics awareness. Mr. Veto offered information to the Committee on the recycle ban in China, recycling contamination, and single-use plastics reduction. He circulated handouts providing members with information on disposable cups, straws, and garbage decomposition. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the March 11, 2019, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Member Shaw, second by Member Fitzpatrick, and a 9-3 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Berenbaum, Cho, Driza, Fitzpatrick, Huang, Kim, Kulas, Ross, and Shaw; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Ahmad, Haile, and Scibona), the March 11, 2019, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. Pledge of Allegiance and Presentation at the City Council Meeting on May 23, 0 2019 Upon a motion by Member Fitzpatrick, second by Member Berenbaum, and a 9-3 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Berenbaum, Cho, Driza, Fitzpatrick, Huang, Kim, Kulas, Ross, and Shaw; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Ahmad, Haile, and Scibona), members Berenbaum and Fitzpatrick were appointed to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide a presentation on Youth Committee activities at the May 23, 2019, City Council meeting. VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS None IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COUNCIL MEMBERS Councilmember Harnik reported the City Council is currently looking at how u-· they view retail on El Paseo. She added that the Coachella Valley Association of Government's Transportation Committee has been discussing ways to 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 8, 2019 C improve Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs due to significant issues caused by the rainstorm on February 14, which is delaying ambulance times from Desert Hot Springs to Palm Springs. 8. STAFF Ms. Lawrence reminded members that the last meeting of the school year will be held on Monday, May 13. She noted that she would be taking senior resignations and appointment of new members to seNe on the Committee to the City Council in June. She added that meetings for the upcoming school year will begin in September. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Events a. Sustainability Party at Lincoln Elementary School - Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. Ms. Lawrence circulated a sign-up sheet for the event. She added that the students would be broken up into groups for rotating activities including games, activity books, seed planting, and crafts. She noted the Committee members would oversee all of the educational (_ activities for the students. b. Youth Committee Presentation at Palm Desert Charter Middle School - Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. Ms. Lawrence indicated that this was a mistake on the agenda. The title should have read Youth/Senior Technology event at the Joslyn Center on this date. She added that this event was scheduled upon suggestion by a member that felt the committee should go back and seNe the seniors in this capacity again due to the success of the last event. Later on in the meeting it was noted that there was a conflict with the scheduled date of May 14 due to AP exams. The committee agreed to hold the event on May 21. Ms. Lawrence noted that she would check with the Joslyn Center to make sure there are no issues with changing the date. 2. Projects and Sub-Committee Updates a. No-Idle Zone for Cleaner Air For Schools Ms. Lawrence stated she would provide an update on this item at a later date. 3 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 8, 2019 b. Anti-bullying Subcommittee0 No update. c. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation No update. d. Legislative Review Committee No update. 1. Other Member Todd Shaw asked what the-theme of this year's Golf Cart Parade is so that he could pass the information along to one of his teachers. Ms. Lawrence recommended he have her contact the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss. X.
