PRELIMINARY MINUTES
TUESDAY, JANUARY 07, 2020 — 3:00 P.M.

CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Hoehn called the meeting to order at 3:03 p.m.

IV. CONSENT ITEMS
Approval of the Minutes of the Marketing Committee meeting of
October 01, 2019.
Rec: Approved
Mr. Hoehn asked for a motion to approve the Consent Items. A
motion was made by Norman and seconded by Forrer to accept
and approve. Motion passed with a 5-0-1 vote; with, Hoehn,
Forrer, Nation, Norman, and Scott voting in favor. None
abstained, Rodriguez absent.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. Update on DSRT SURF.
Rec: Receive and File.
Mr. Olson presented to the Committee a PowerPoint overview of the
proposed DSRT SURF project. No action was requested, but discussion
ensued regarding the naming rights of the new project. Committee
members each voiced strong support for the name "Palm Desert" to
somehow be incorporated into the eventual brand identity of DSRT SURF.
Mr. Hoehn in particular spoke strongly and knowledgably about this topic,
based on his experience at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
PRESENTATION OF NEW AD CAMPAIGN
Rec: Review and recommend approval to the City Council.
Mr. Cohen reviewed with the Committee the process by which Ideapeddler
developed the new ad campaign for the City, and the presented several
examples of collateral, including a static ad, a billboard and a video ad.
Discussion ensued, during which members expressed support for the
process and the results.
Mr. Hoehn asked for a motion to approve the new campaign. A motion was
made by Nation and seconded by Forrer to approve. Motion passed with
a 5-0-1 vote; with, Hoehn, Forrer, Nation, Norman, and Scott voting in
favor. None abstained, Rodriguez absent.

VIII. REPORTS FROM CITY COUNCIL LIAISONS
A. City Council.
Mayor Gina Nestande, City of Palm Desert — Ms. Nestande informed the
Committee of the date change for the State of the City address, which will now
be held on Friday, March 09, 2020. She also mentioned that the City Council
would be discussing action on Palm Desert Country Club at its upcoming meeting
on Thursday, January 09, 2020.
IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS
Chair.
Rolf Hoehn, Indian Wells Tennis Garden — Mr. Hoehn provided a recap of
the National Pickleball Tournament, which was held at Indian Wells Tennis
Garden in November. With more than 4,000 matches over nine days, the
tournament hosted 2,300 players, many of whom stayed in Palm Desert
hotels. Mr. Hoehn mentioned that the tournament gained wide exposure
by streaming the matches, rather than televising them. Moving on from that
tournament, the Tennis Garden staff is now working hard in anticipation of
the upcoming BNP Paribas.
Committee Members.
Bruce Nation, Desert Willow Golf Resort — Mr. Nation told the Committee
that not only did Desert Willow have a great year in 2019, but it's also
looking ahead to another solid year in 2020, with a lot of advance bookings
and high demand moving into the high season.
Erin Scott, The Living Desert Zoo and Botanical Gardens — Ms. Scott
reported on the great success this year of Wild Lights, which welcomed
38,000 attendees over 19 nights. Upcoming events include the opening of
the zoo's new Australia exhibit (March 21, 2020), Palm Desert Brew at the
Zoo (April 4, 2020), and hosting the mid -year meeting of the Association
of Zoos & Aquariums (April 4-9, 2020). This year is also the 50th birthday
of The Living Desert, with a birthday party on Saturday, January 11, 2020,

and events throughout the year.
Franchesca Forrer, Westfield Palm Desert — Ms. Forrer shared that the
mall's STREET event for Palm Desert First Weekend in November was its
most successful to date, with more than 6,000 attendees and more than
$45,000 in sales. The mall also enjoyed a solid holiday season, with many
stores reporting increased year -over -year sales, including Macy's and
H&M.
Jeffrey Norman, McCallum Theatre — Mr. Norman recapped the Palm
Desert Choreography Festival and the theatre's Gala, which raised $1.5
million and featured a performance by Seal. With the beginning of the
season approaching, the McCallum is now in the beyond -busy time in
which it puts on 100 shows in 100 nights.
