ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Chairperson Bussing reminded the Commission members to complete the Form 700 and return it to the City Clerk. 0 0 Art in Public Places Minutes March 21, 2007 IV. CONSENT CALENDAR Minutes of the regular meeting held on February 21, 2007. Upon Motion by Commissioner Hough and second by Commissioner Bussing, the Minutes of February 2i, 2007, were approved unanimously with Commissioners Thompson and Weston absent. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION Mr. Twedt reported that Council approved the request for Out of State Travel for the Public Art Coordinator and Public Art Technician to attend the Americans for the Arts Conference in June. VI. CONSENT ITEMS HELD OVER None VII. NEW BUSINESS A. CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSALS FOR EXHIBITION IN THE PALM DESERT COMMUNITY GALLERY FOR THE 2007/2008 SEASON Ms. Schwartz noted that six shows are held in the Gallery each year. One show is always dedicated to the Student Art and Essay Contest and the other is dedicated to the show she curates with the local galleries. She received 22 applications for the remaining four exhibition time slots. After Ms. Schwartz presented the work from the artists, it was the consensus of the Commission to include Michael Paul Thiry, Jerry Hirshman, and Dave Stanfield (three person show as one show), the COD Student Show, Barry Wolfryd, Karen and Tony Barone, Bob Hoffmann, and Roxanne Castillas for exhibition in the Palm Desert Community Gallery for the 2007/2008 season. It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by Commissioner Grochau to include Michael Paul Thiry, Jerry Hirshman, and Dave Stanfield (three person show as one show), the COD Student Show, Barry Wolfryd, Karen and Tony Barone, Bob Hoffmann, and Roxanne Castillas with staff Art in Public Places Minutes March 21, 2007 0 combining artists to create suitable shows. Motion carried unanimously with Commissioners Thompson and Weston absent. Ms. Schwartz stated that if any of the artists above are unable to participate she would ask Stuart Funk to exhibit. B. CONSIDERATION OF ARTISTS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE CITY OF PALM DESERTS ARTIST REGISTRY Artwork by lsah Baka, Barbara Wilson, Bijan Masoumpanah, Jason Messinger, Shiela Cavalluzzi, Bob Emser, Tony and Karen Barone, Mary Josephson, and Lonnie Feather were reviewed to be considered for the City of Palm Desert's Artist Registry. It was moved by Commissioner Grochau and seconded by Commissioner Stenning to include Bijan Masoumpanah, Jason Messinger, Shiela Cavalluzzi, Bob Emser, Tony and Karen Barone, and Lonnie Feather in the City of Palm Desert's Artist Registry. Motion approved unanimously with Commissioners Thompson and Weston absent. VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS NONE IX. OLD BUSINESS A. CONSIDERATION OF DEVELOPING A PAINTED TRAFFIC SIGNAL BOX PROJECT FOR EL PASEO Mr. Twedt stated that each project for the painted traffic signal box program includes a large and small box, which are located next to each other. He gave each artist a choice of doing just one box or utilizing both boxes into the design. The Commission reviewed the designs that were included in the agenda packet by three pre -selected artists. Marcy Gregory proposed a design that would incorporate both the large and small boxes into one design. Staff appointed her the box on San Pablo and El Paseo near Three Dog Bakery. Maria Hunt proposed two individual designs {18 hole at Desert Willow she named "A Birdie on the 18th , and a view looking from the Visitor Center toward the mountains). Staff assigned her the box in front of El Paseo Square. Elizabeth Stephenson proposed a design for one box with different Art in Public Places Minutes March 21. 2007 designs on each side. She also included a second design for the front of a box but did not include designs for the back or sides. She was assigned the box in front of Bank of America. It was the consensus of the Commission that it preferred the wrap around designs as opposed to different designs on each side of the box. It was moved by Commissioner Grochau and seconded by Commissioner Stenning to accept both designs from Maria Hunt who will paint two sets of boxes and Marcy Gregory's design that will include one set of boxes. Motion carried unanimously with Commissioners Thompson and Weston absent. B. CONSIDERATION OF AN ENTRADA DEL PASEO PUBLIC ART PROJECT Mr. Twedt reported that he and Ms. Schwartz researched artists who specialize in realistic art. The following artists were proposed for artwork for the Visitor CenterNisitor Center site. Jim Dine, Deborah Butterfield, Barry Flanagan, Sophie Ryder, Gwynn Murrill, and Tom Otterness. If Jim Dine's artwork is selected, Mr. Twedt's idea is to place it at the Visitor Center where the artwork by Jim Richardson are currently. It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by Commissioner Stenning to have staff present artists Jim Dine, Gwynn Murrill, and Deborah Butterfield including representative work and blos on each artist to City Council for review. Motion carried unanimous with Commissioners Thompson and Weston absent. X. PROJECT STATUS REPORTS 1. Palm Desert Community Gallery Ms. Schwartz reported that the current exhibit, "Snapshots of the American West", would be taken down on March 30. The Student Art and Essay Contest will be hung the following week. 4 Art in Public Places Minutes March 21, 2007 2. Website Ms. Schwartz reported that the online voting is now available for Palm Desert residents to select their favorite pre - approved sculpture from the 2007/08 El Paseo Exhibition. 3. Docent Program No report. XI. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. STAFF Mr. Twedt reported that the restoration of Desert Dessert is near completion. Mr. Twedt reported that the Art and Architecture Book won a gold ADDY award. Mr. Twedt informed the Commission that Council directed the developer of a new bank located at the corner of Monterey and Highway 111 to have the Public Art Department assist in placing artwork at that location. Mr. Twedt reported that the voting for the sculpture being chosen by the residents is favoring the "Danseur" by Jean-Louis Corby and feels it would fit perfectly in front of the bank. He has sent the image of the artwork to the architect and developer. B. COMMISSION MEMBERS Commissioner Hough stated that the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale is taking place. She presented the catalog of the sculptures and map to the Commission as a possible idea for publications for future El Paseo Exhibitions. • COMMISSION REPORTS • LIAISON REPORTS 1.
