A. CONSIDERATION OF HEATH SATOW, STEVE RIEMAN,
AND ALLEN ROOT TO WORK WITH LANDSCAPE
DESIGN ARCHITECTS FOR THE MONTEREY
AVENUE/DINAH SHORE MEDIAN
LANDSCAPE/SCULPTURE PROJECT
Mr. Twedt reported that a 700 foot median would be installed
on Monterey Avenue from Dinah Shore north to Interstate
10. A federal grant will fund the project. This project had
started to take place several years ago but due to the delay
in the planning of the project the City lost the grant. The
Public Works Department reapplied for the grant and the
RFP for the project is being sent out. Council instructed the
Public Works and Public Art Departments to require the
landscape architect to hire an artist to work with them and to
integrate art into the median. There is $1.2 million for the
entire project including the landscaping and artwork. It was
the consensus of the Commission to have the three artists
collaborate to create an art piece for the median. Mr. Twedt
would suggest to the three artists to look at the existing
public art entry signs as influences for the artwork for the
median. The Commission asked to review the artwork
design.
It was moved by Commissioner Thompson and
seconded by Commissioner Grochau to approve Heath Satow,
Steve Rieman, and Allen Root to work with the landscape
design architect for the Monterey Avenue/Dinah Shore Drive
median. Motion carried unanimously with Commissioner
Stenning absent.

A. CONSIDERATION OF THE TEN ARTISTS FOR THE
"EMBRACING THE DESERT LIGHT" PROJECT
Mr. Twedt stated that the budget for the "Embracing the
Desert Light" project would be $100,000. He added that the
location of the art piece would depend on the artist. Staff
suggested Ned Kahn who could potentially create sequential
elements to be placed on the El Paseo median on the west
end of El Paseo to Highway 74, and on El Paseo from
Portola to Highway 111, which would connect both ends of
El Paseo.
The following artists were reviewed for the "Embracing the
Desert Light" project. DeWaine Valentine, Helen Pashgian,
Robert Irwin, Susan Chorpenning, Michael Hayden, Stephen
Knapp, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, and Ned Kahn.
The Commission selected the following artists to submit
proposals for the "Embracing the Desert Light" project: Ned
Kahn, Peter Erskine, and DeWain Valentine with Helen
Pashgain as an alternate.

did not hear from Terry Allen. Terry Allen was out of town
when the letters went out asking if they were interested but
he later called Mr. Twedt to say he would like to present a
proposal for the project. So there were now four artists who
will be presenting proposals.
The artists commissioned for the Traffic Signal Boxes project
have begun painting. KMIR interviewed passersby and the
