MINUTES
Wednesday, April 11, 2018
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Boren convened the meeting at 9:01 a.m.

IV. CONSENT CALENDAR
Minutes of the regular meeting held on March 14, 2018.
Commissioner Darby moved to approve the Minutes of March
14, 2018. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Adney and carried
5-0-0 with Adney, Boren, Campbell, Darby, and Miller voting AYE,
with Hough ABSENT (during this item only).

Minutes of the special meeting held on March 20, 2018.
Commissioner Hough moved to approve the Minutes of March
20, 2018. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Adney and carried
4-0-2 with Adney, Boren, Hough, and Miller voting AYE with
Campbell and Darby ABSTAINING.
V. DISCUSSION ITEMS
A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION – Mayor Pro
Tem Susan Marie Weber
Ms. Glickman reported that the approval of the eighteen
sculptures and four alternates for the 2019/2020 El Paseo
Sculpture Exhibition is on the April 12, City Council agenda.
B. PLANNING COMMISSION REPORT – Lindsay Holt
No report.
C. ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION (ARC) REPORT
– John Vuksic
No report.
VI. CONSENT ITEMS HELD OVER

VII. NEW BUSINESS
A. CONSIDERATION OF ARTIST(S) TO BE INCLUDED IN
CITY OF PALM DESERT’S ARTIST REGISTRY
Ms. Glickman stated that there were no artists applying for
the City of Palm Desert’s Artist Registry and asked to
continue the item.
Commissioner Campbell moved to continue the
consideration of artist(s) to be included in the City of Palm
Desert’s Artist Registry to a date uncertain. Motion was
seconded by Commissioner Hough and carried 6-0-0 with
Adney, Boren, Campbell, Darby, Hough, and Miller voting AYE.

VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS
A. APPROVE A $15,000 SPONSORSHIP FROM THE PUBLIC
ART FUND FOR THE 2019 DESERT X EXHIBITION
(Continued from the meeting of March 14, 2018)
Ms. Glickman stated that staff is recommending a
sponsorship in the amount of $35,000 for the 2019 Desert X
Exhibition, and with the sponsorship the City would require
that one sculpture be placed in Palm Desert. Of the
$35,000, she is asking that $15,000 come from the Art in
Public Places fund. The balance will be paid from the
Marketing budget. Ms. Jenny Gil, Executive Director of
Desert X, gave an overview of the 2019 exhibition. Ms. Gil
stated that she has been meeting with all of the cities in the
Valley regarding the 2019 exhibition and anticipates that
most of them will be sponsoring. There will be
approximately sixteen artworks installed throughout the
Valley for the exhibition, which will run from February 9
through April 21, 2019. The Commissioners expressed their
enthusiasm from the 2017 Exhibition and are looking forward
to another successful event.
Commissioner Campbell moved to approve a $15,000
sponsorship from the Art in Public Places fund for the 2019
Desert X Exhibition. Motion was seconded by Commissioner
Hough and carried 6-0-0 with Adney, Boren, Campbell, Darby,
Hough, and Miller voting AYE.
IX. OLD BUSINESS

X. PROJECT STATUS REPORTS
A. Palm Desert Community Gallery
Ms. Thompson reported that the artworks for the 2018
Student Art and Essay Contest have been hung. Judging of
the artwork will be completed by April 12 and the essays will
be judged by April 14. The Award Ceremony will be held on
Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council
Chamber.
B. Docent Tours

There were two guests on the tour of the artworks at the
Library on Saturday, April 7.
C. First Weekend
Ms. Glickman reported that the concert series in the Civic
Center Park will start on Thursday, May 3.
D. Film Series
Ms. Glickman reported that the film series concludes
Thursday, April 19 with Brillo Box (Three Cents Off).
XI. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. STAFF
Ms. Glickman announced that she will be attending the
Americans for the Arts Conference June 13 through 17 and
will need to change the date of the June Art in Public Places
Commission meeting. It was the concurrence of the
Commission members to change the date of the meeting to
Wednesday, June 20.
Ms. Glickman thanked the Commission members for their
patience with the new selection process for the El Paseo
Sculpture Exhibition.
Ms. Thompson noted that the set of two traffic signal
cabinets on Fred Waring Drive and Deep Canyon Road have
been completed by artist Diane Morgan. Ms. Morgan sent
updates of her progress and noted that she had received a
lot of complements. She stated to staff that she had a lot of
fun working on the project. The cabinets on Fred Waring
Drive and Cook Street that are being painted by John
Cuevas are almost complete.
B. COMMISSION REPORTS
Commissioner Hough reported that Journey through the
Desert is on display at the Palm Springs Art Museum in
Palm Springs. Commissioner Hough will be attending the
annual museum conference in Phoenix in June.

Chairperson Boren reported that the Coachella Valley
History Museum will display Susan Smith Evans
photography of pottery.
XII. ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Boren adjourned the meeting at 9:59 a.m.
