MINUTES
January 19, 2005
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Bussing convened the meeting at 8:35 a.m.

Minutes of the regular meeting held on December 15, 2004.
Upon Motion by Commissioner Dickinson and second by
Commissioner Grochau, the Minutes of December 15, 2004, were
approved unanimously.

V. DISCUSSION ITEMS
A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION
Mr. Twedt reported that City Council approved the mural
restoration project for the Council Chamber proposed by Bill
Ware.
Mr. Twedt reported that City Council approved the
"Embracing the Desert" program of temporary public
artworks.

VII. NEW BUSINESS
A. CONSIDERATION TO INSTALL "DESERT ROADS" FENCE
AT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
No action was taken on this item. Staff was contacted on
January 18, by Hal Rover who stated that the Historical
Society Board met and declined the idea of installing "Desert
Roads" at the Historical Society.
Mr. Twedt suggested installing "Desert Roads" at the future
Palm Desert art center. He added that repainting the fence
could be a class project. Students could research various
paints that would adhere to the metal fence. Mr. Twedt
would use the original color renderings of the fence, give
them to the instructor who would have the students follow
the artist rendering of the colors.
B. CONSIDERATION TO APPROVE THE CLARK BROOKS
SCULPTURE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE 2005/06 EL
PASEO EXHIBITION
It was moved by Commissioner Greenberg and
seconded by Commissioner Grochau to accept the sculpture
"l Forget" by Clark Brooks to be included in the 2005/06 El
Paseo Exhibition. Motion carried unanimously.

C. CONSIDERATION TO ACCEPT A STONE SCULPTURE
FROM E.H. HEIMANN, JR. FOR THE PERMANENT
PUBLIC ART COLLECTION
Commissioner Hough asked if any sites had been selected
for the artwork. It was suggested by Mr. Twedt that the
sculpture could be placed near the new Visitor Information
Center. Commissioner Hough stated that she is supportive
of including the artwork in the City's collection if staff feels it
could be utilized at the new Visitor Information Center and
be sited nicely. Commissioner Grochau noted that in Mr.
Heimann, Jr.'s bio it stated that he has been sober for
thirteen years. He added that if the Commission accepts the
piece the Visitor Center may open its doors to an AA
meeting. Commissioner Grochau stated'the liked the idea of
the sculpture being placed at the Visitor Center but would
like other options of locations to be considered. The piece is
valued at $25,000.00. Mr. Twedt stated that the
transportation costs for the piece would most likely come
from the AIPP funds.
It was moved by Commissioner Greenberg and
seconded by Commissioner Dickinson to accept the stone
sculpture from E.H. Heimann, Jr. for Palm Desert's permanent
public art collection with the option of discussing placement
of the art other than at the site at the new Visitor Information
Center. Motion carried unanimously.
D. REVIEW OF ARTISTS REQUESTING TO BE IN THE
VIRTUAL GALLERY
Work from the following artists was reviewed to be
considered for the City of Palm Desert's Virtual Gallery.
Gary Rosenblum, Dennis Ellman, Malcom Doran, and
Eunice Emerson.
It was moved by Commissioner Grochau and seconded
by Commissioner Hough to accept Gary Rosenblum, Dennis
El!man, and Eunice Emerson to the City of Palm Desert's
Virtual Gallery. Motion carried unanimously.

E. CONSIDERATION OF ARTSITS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE
CITY OF PALM DESERT'S ARTIST SLIDE REGISTRY
Work from the following artists was reviewed to be
considered for the City of Palm Desert's Artist Slide Registry.
Thomas Holzer, Phillip Smith, and Kevin Robb.
It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by
Commissioner Dickinson to include Thomas Holzer, Phillip
Smith, and Kevin Robb into the Artist Slide Registry. Motion
carried unanimously.

X. PROJECT STATUS REPORTS
1. North Wing Gallery
Ms. Schwartz stated she is preparing next year's schedule of
exhibitions for the North Wing Gallery. The Public Art
Department staff and gallery location will be moving to the
new Visitor Information Center. Beginning September 2005,
exhibitions will be held in the new gallery. Councilmember
Benson had asked for the "Best of the North Wing Gallery"
which would include "favorites" from previous shows to be
the first show in the new space. Ms. Schwartz had been
asked to do a College of the Desert faculty and student show
(independently). She has a list of 20 artists who have
expressed interest in showing in the gallery for the upcoming
season. These 20 artists will be sent an RFP for the
remaining exhibition timeslots. Ms. Schwartz will curate the
exhibitions and bring the proposed exhibitions before the
AIPP Commission for review.
Upon question by Chairperson Bussing, Ms. Schwartz
responded that she is researching pedestals to
accommodate ceramics for the new gallery.

2. Website
Ms. Schwartz reported that the new El Paseo Exhibition tour
will be uploaded on the website in the very new future.
3. Docent Program
Ms. Schwartz reported that the Docent Program is going
well. She has been receiving calls for private group tours.
She met with a staff member for the Girl Scouts of America
who is interested in working with the docents to help the girls
earn patches. The training process is continuing and has
been successful.
4. El Paseo Exhibition
Mr. Twedt reported he was very pleased with the turnout at
the El Paseo Exhibition dedication on January 6. Several
artists were present for the event and gave brief descriptions
of their pieces.
Mr. Twedt reported that the Desert Sun is creating a new
magazine called 92260 that will be publicized in March and
will feature Palm Desert's public art program.
Robert Menifee is writing an article on the new El Paseo
Exhibition.
XI. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. STAFF
Mr. Twedt announced that the Public Art Department staff
would be moving to the new Visitor Information Center in
July.
Mr. Twedt discussed the possibility of having a community
art center in Palm Desert. He stated that Mr. Kohn has
asked him to prepare a White Paper to support how and why
a community art center would benefit the City of Palm
Desert. He would like to include Councilmember Benson
and Mayor Crites on a tour to Huntington Beach to see its art
center.

Ms. Schwartz will be contacting Donna Billick and Arthur
Gonzales to set a date for the dedication of the Baja Palapa.
B. COMMISSION MEMBERS
Commissioner Grochau noted that during a recent visit to the
Civic Center Park with his family, he noticed quite a few sets
of mother/daughters who took notice of the Mother/Child
Sculpture Garden.

1. PLANNING COMMISSION — Sonia Campbell
Ms. Campbell reported that the Planning Commission
approved a satellite for the University of Phoenix on
Merle Drive.
